Talk-Like-A-Pirate Day 2021

Today was Talk-Like-a-Pirate Day, so I donned my pirate t-shirt and pirate socks and set out for a piratey sort of day, uttering the word "arrrr" as frequently as I could in accordance to the code.  Proper use of the word is more like guidelines, of course.  But as you can see above, we did watch ourselves a pirate-themed movie tonight, "Blackbeard's Ghost."  I haven't seen this in quite some time, so being captain of the crew, I set course for this movie before tonight, closing out a good piratey sort of day.  I know, "piratey" isn't a real word.  But try telling that to pirates, and see what happens.

Also in accordance with pirate guidelines, the Atlanta Falcons faced the bombardment of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which seemed like a fitting NFL football game to watch on such a day like this.  Of course, Atlanta lost, which goes without saying.  What does need to be said is why this blog is talking about football, and that answer is found within the theme of our Free Chapel Youth tonight.

It was a football themed night tonight, one called "Rep Your School" night, where students were asked to wear the colors of their school, or perhaps even a school shirt.  Maddie had her shirt from East Forsyth High School Broncos, wearing it proudly.  Just this past week, the Broncos won their first game ever, and that was a lot to celebrate there.  It was a great time, with buffalo wings and football games on the television screens, and games like the one you see above.  Also included were the messages and a worship service, which made for a fantastic time for all the students, including Maddie.

Mom, Nana and I were out at the same time, shopping at various places, including thrift stores.  We found something wonderful, and Maddie was so happy with it.  It was a dress for the homecoming dance, one that works with her masquerade mask.  It's a black dress, and you'll have to see it in pictures soon enough, but when we all got home together, Maddie tried it on right away and was pleased with it.  This was a big deal for us, as we'd need to spend the next week shopping around and so on, looking for just the right dress as far as size and appearance.  Plus we'd probably have to drive some distances too.  So to have this resolved now is a great thing, and of course most importantly, Maddie is happy with the look of things.

Of course, it's Sunday, and there was a KidPak service this morning.  Maddie was up there with the other actors, and she nailed her part again.  She's been a reliable part with steadily increasing lines over the last year, a nice addition to our cast.  I'm so happy to see her up there.  Of course, today I wasn't actually in the audience, as once again I was playing the part of a dinosaur.  Although this time I was a toy dinosaur tempting one of the actors off the stage to the visitor store.  It was a good day at KidPak, and at the other campuses, it was a good day too - we had a different script, one that I had written for those campuses that was especially made for "Talk-Like-a-Pirate Day," and from what I heard, it went really well.  Here's a photo from Braselton's campus:

As you can see in the picture, it involved pirates and dinosaurs.  Which I thought only fitting given the day itself.  To close this entry today, I thought I'd include this script, which I haven't done in a while, but it celebrates the day in a fun way, which is what I heard happen at the various campuses.  So, let me close here by saying, may your sails be full of gust, and there always be treasure to seek out, mates.  Or, in shorter terms, "Arrrrr!"

KidPak Adventures:  Lost World
“Just Stay With the Crew”

CUE TRACK: 1 Jurassic Park

CUE SLIDE:  “JURASSIC PARK BACKGROUND”

HOST:        “If you find yourself out on the seas very far

Be on the lookout for those that like to say, “Arrrr!”

OFFSTAGE:  “Arrrr!”

HOST:        For there in their boats, lurking somewhere offshore

Roamed the fearsome and brave Pirate Dinosaurs!

PIRATE DINOSAUR enters STAGE RIGHT (person in inflatable dinosaur costume with eye patch, and a sword and/or hook on one hand).

PIRATE DINOSAUR:  “Arrrrr!

HOST:        In this story we’re telling, you can see here our star

He’s the first mate named Dino, and he likes to say ‘Arrrr!”

PIRATE DINOSAUR:  “Arrrrr!

HOST:        Now his captain named Rex always said what to do

No matter what happens, just stay with the crew

HOST:        So you might just be wondering why he’s on his own

He saw something tempting, and set off all alone

TEMPTER enters with TREASURE CHEST at STAGE LEFT, gesturing to treasure.  TEMPTER looks somewhat creepy.  For extra obviousness, TREASURE CHEST can have a piece of paper attached to it with the words, “A TRAP!”

HOST:        Ah!  Each scurvy pirate has a treasure radar

They just know where there’s treasure, and of course they say…

PIRATE DINOSAUR:  “Arrrr!

PIRATE DINOSAUR goes over towards treasure hastily, but then stops short.

HOST:        But then he remembered his captain’s words so true

If you want to stay out of trouble, just stay with the crew!

PIRATE DINOSAUR turns and returns to STAGE LEFT

HOST:        No matter the rough seas, no matter the weather.

Let us not give up meeting in church all together!

TEMPTER beckons PIRATE DINOSAUR over again, and PIRATE DINOSAUR is wavering.

HOST:        But he stopped some time back, and watched pirates on TV

So he lost all his focus, and felt lost at sea.

PIRATE DINOSAUR looks really, really tempted.

HOST:        Yes, when we miss out, and get away from our source

Just like this pirate, our lives can go really off course!

PIRATE DINOSAUR starts to go over to STAGE LEFT and TEMPTER

HOST:        If you think that this pirate’s about to go way too far

Shout out a loud warning.  Let me hear you scream, “Arrrr!”

Let audience respond.

PIRATE DINOSAUR stops, and goes back towards STAGE RIGHT.

HOST:        That’s the great thing about church – we know just what to do!

We help one another when we stay with the crew!

PIRATE DINOSAUR:  (to audience) “Thanks, mates!

TEMPTER beckons PIRATE DINOSAUR over again, and PIRATE DINOSAUR is wavering once more.

HOST:        And when temptation comes calling, we can say au revoir!

Which means goodbye scallywag!  Or you could just…

PIRATE DINOSAUR:  “Arrrr!

PIRATE DINOSAUR rushes across towards STAGE LEFT and TEMPTER, chasing TEMPTER around for a bit, flailing sword and/or hook until TEMPTER flees offstage.

HOST:        Our friend Dino had enough.  He remembered and knew

As we sail life’s seas together, we need to stay with the crew!

HOST:        But before he returns, leaving this odd sandbar

He’s got one thing to say, and of course that is…

PIRATE DINOSAUR:  “Arrrrr!

PIRATE DINOSAUR waves and exits STAGE RIGHT in a hurry.

HOST:        As we end this here story on Talk-Like-A-Pirate Day

Remember the words Captain Rex had to say

Just stay with the crew, and keep coming to church

You’ll feel so much stronger, and not in a lurch

And when temptation comes up, and is ready to spar?

It won’t stand a chance!  Let me hear you scream, “Arrrr!”

Let audience respond.

HOST:        The end.
