Yes, it did get cold. We're in the twenties currently, which is nothing compared to the more northern states. But consider that we were in the seventies earlier, and this all comes as quite a shock!
Tonight, we went to an event for the school, the Math Tools and Games Family Night. Madison learned a few math-related games, somewhat like playing cards with differing amounts of coins printed on the cards - which one added up to be the most? Which ever that was would be the winner of that hand.
There was pizza, of course. There's always pizza at these things. Pizza and sweet tea are the most essential cheap food you can get. We don't eat pizza as much as we used to, so Madison and Daddy enjoyed a few slices as we sat at our lunch table. We also got some freebies, some flash cards to help with subtraction and multiplication problems. And there was a drawing as well, where several kids won prizes that night. Madison actually had her name drawn, something she was quite delighted about - she skipped up to the front of the room, and grabbed her free prize, an educational board game.
The night was not over yet though - we got to sit through a patriotic performance by the Chestatee Chorus, who sang several songs about America, songs Daddy remembers singing when he was in kindergarten. "My Country 'Tis of Thee," "This Land is Your Land," and of course "The Star Spangled Banner." We all rose to attention, Madison too, with our hands over our hearts.
It was a nice night, and as it was a math-themed night, there was a bit of explanation about the Common Core, although it was somewhat glossed over. Evidently we old-timers are stuck with that bad habit of doing things the simple, easy way. As opposed to going all over the map just to come to the same result that 1 + 2 = 3. We did fill out a comment card about it, but we'll probably need to get more involved if things progress to a point where there is too much stress or concern.
The one Christmas tree is done, by the way. Now time for the other. It looks so nice there, especially with the open fire nearby, just like a Christmas card. We've been doing a bit of shopping here and there as well, and lots of moving furniture about. We've got to get the house all ready for visitors, and for Thanksgiving. To that extent, we were moving things downstairs and bringing other things upstairs. We got more wood, and did some grocery shopping. All the while, the thermometer kept dropping down, down, down.
It's cold tonight - although nothing like that eerie Polar Vortex from earlier. There was something unearthly about that front that passed over, with the earth groaning and the winds howling. Everyone stayed indoors, and it reminded me of the Passover scene from "The Ten Commandments." Nobody went outside, and we all hoped our pipes would survive the brutal cold. But that was a while ago, and not so much now. For now, it's just downright chilly outside, and we'll be just fine.
