Spooky Gingerbread House 2023

This afternoon we created our spooky gingerbread house for the year, a delightfully tasty creation that took us a while to figure out what to do with, but once we got going, it was a lot of fun.  I think the highlight is the crescent moon up there made from an Oreo cookie - we got that idea from the box the gingerbread house came in.  But I also like the open cookie with the bats in it and the confetti wreath there.  Maddie used cookie tops as a doorstep, and a lot of brown, black and orange coloring for the ground.

We used Dolly's icing for the adhesive, and if you're wondering about the roof, it's Carmella Creeper cereal.  We liked the Booberry idea so much last year that we decided to go with it!

Here's the back of it, using some ideas we saw on the box as well, including that Oreo bat towards the top.  The back of the house uses more Oreos than the front - the kit came with a lot of those Oreo cookies, so we wanted to use all those up.

It was a fun afternoon, and it took us quite a bit of time, slowly working away.  We had a Ghostbusters marathon while putting this together, going through Ghostbusters I and II, and later on tonight we watched Ghostbusters Afterlife before bedtime, so it was all three parts in one day!  Of course, the first two were sort of on the television as we were plugging away at the house.  We don't mind the 2016 version so much, but it wasn't canon, so we stuck with that!

Anyway, oh - one more side of the house to show.  This last side of the house was Maddie's, and I just love it.  Take a look below.

In her words, she felt like it was done by an eight-year-old.  But I think there's something generally creepy about a large deformed face on the side of a house.  It's like this is the house's personality, and it's slightly worried and/or com plaintive.  Maybe you should tread carefully around this house, or it'll jump up and bite you!

Our 2023 creepy gingerbread house turned out well, and best of all it was a fun process making it throughout the afternoon.  The plastic base is a little weak, unable to fully take the weight of the house, but that's okay - we have a place for the house over in the kitchen where it'll stay put throughout the fall season.

So here's this morning - the triumphant return of the giant tater tot.  In 2006 or so, Mom made a giant tater tot costume.  It is ridiculous and fun, and in this morning's script, our padawans were at a dark side cave where their fears become reality.  In this case, Jeremiah's fear is a giant tater tot.

It's Dark Lord Tater Tot, who's been left in the oven a little too long and turned to the dark side.  This skit was a mad-lib and it turned out really well!  We got a lot of laughs and excitement, and there was even time for a fun lightsaber battle at the end.

Of course, our heroes were triumphant when all was said and done, and the bottom line about temptation was repeated time and again:  It's a trap!

The tater tot even returned to help with the message this afternoon.  It was a fun morning at KidPak, quite a different one, but that's good.  We had a great time and the kids certainly learned something with a consistent bottom line weaved throughout the service.

After church, this afternoon for lunch I was cooking bratwurst on the grill outside.  I cooked some hot dogs for Maddie, while Mom was serving up some cooked onions, peppers and mushrooms for a delicious bratwurst sandwich.  The weather is just gorgeous outside, so beautiful.  We enjoyed a nice meal together before heading off to our dessert, which of course was an entire afternoon of picking pieces of candy from our gingerbread house!

Tonight we read more from "Wee Free Men" before saying our prayers and heading off to sleep. We had a few other things to deal with today, including tax ID numbers, writing all of these people who auditioned, and trying to figure out the upstairs air conditioning unit.  Some of these issues will continue on into tomorrow.  But it was a good day overall.  We said our prayers at the end of it, brought the plush entourage down the hall to Maddie's room where everyone was tucked in, and soon enough we were all asleep.
