So we had some calzones today, and suddenly the realization hit us, this is Madison's first calzone. Yes, it is now officially Calzone Day! Mommy had brought them home, and we got to enjoy these tasty calzones in the comfort of our own home. If only I had brought out the accordion music and lit the candles - we could have converted our dining area into a fancy Italian Restaurant. But no, we were content to simply taste these majestic wonders without much other fanfare. Madison enjoyed hers very much, a promise of new things to come. It's difficult getting her to try - and like - new things enough, so this will be a new variation. It doesn't even require gallons of hot sauce, as other things tend to do. Seriously, she goes through hot sauce very quickly. Maybe one bottle a week - maybe more. I am not exaggerating!
Today was a work day, as we were getting the ringmaster costume together, amongst other things. We were writing too. We were also reading about the earthquakes in California. They are frightening, but at the same time at this point, it appears as if no one was seriously injured. This is a testament to the construction requirements out there, as earthquakes of these magnitudes would be substantially more devastating elsewhere. As is, the shaking was quite unnerving for many, especially as they were fearing what we've been thinking of for years: the Big One. Daddy was out in California in 1989, one week before that one huge earthquake took out a level of the Oakland Bay Bridge. We literally went across that bridge a week before the earthquake shook a section of it off.
Nana and Ye-Ye were out near there a week ago. It's part of their tradition to return home and watch on television as calamity visits whatever destination they go to. In this case, their destination was the actual epicenter of the earthquake. Previous destinations have been destroyed by wildfires, hurricanes, and manmade or natural disasters. They have quite literally been a mark for disaster! It's a running "joke" with us, and of course it's not something that's entirely in our hands. It just so happens that quite frequently throughout their lives, the places they go visit on vacation ... are destroyed about a week or so later...
It's been super hot lately outside, very humid and not entirely pleasant to be outside. Just as we don't spend time outside in the winter due to occasional super cold weather, it's just not that great to be outside in the summer time when the temperature is so hot. Even going down to the pool in this direct sunlight can be a bit punishing. So we try to manage our outdoor activities in the morning and evening, staying inside during the warmest parts of the day.
The plan - as soon as this vacation is over with - is to do more tennis in July in these early parts of the day. Madison is anxious to get out there and try it some more, and maybe with some trips to the pool afterwards to cool off. Of course, we'll be in the pool a few times next week, and maybe even some tennis, or at least some pickle ball. We're packing, getting things together for a brief trip down to Florida. The usual packing is going on from Madison: finding movies, finding music, finding games, finding books, finding outfits. We don't typically pack all in one go, but Mommy instead has us packing several days in advance, a big suitcase set up as we load it up in smaller stages.
Daddy spent a good bit of time memorizing lines for tomorrow's service - a bit nerve-wracking. We'll be up late doing that tonight. We read tonight from our Star Wars book, and said our prayers the whole routine. She's getting up early tonight, as we are tomorrow, so it's an early night for all of us.
