2022 Lunar Eclipse

We set the alarm this morning super early, although we were already up for some reason, and that was all to see a lunar eclipse that hung there, perfectly placed in the sky.  The weather wasn't terribly cold, unlike the last time I stayed outside with the camera to catch a lunar eclipse.  Oh, and speaking of which, this morning I got to use the new camera, and it was super awesome.  I propped it on the mailbox, using it as a tripod, but I got the pictures I wanted to.  I think they turned out pretty well!

The moon descended over the horizon before the eclipse itself was over with - the entire process is a lot longer than the solar eclipse.  For that reason I was able to tinker with he new camera and get some nice photos of it.  The next lunar eclipse is in about three years from what I understand, so I was glad to get out there and see it.  Also, the weather was just right for it.  The only downside was having to get up super early to see it.  I was a little tired the rest of the day, but it was a pretty unique morning.

The rest of the day was quiet, although there was a nationwide election tonight.  We voted a few weeks ago.  We stayed up a little to watch what results we could, but the trend of late is that election results don't actually get decided until the next day or so.  I remember elections being decided, for the most part, the night of the Election Day.  Of course there were exceptions, the year 2000 being the most notable.  Anyway, it appears as if staying up is no longer something you want to do so much, as the fluctuations in numbers are highly misleading and on top of that there are a large number of elections that no one will no the answers to.  We do know this though:  our governor for the next four years is Brian Kemp.  The votes for him were sufficiently large enough that this time around his competitor actually conceded.  So no new governor for Maddie, which brings her tally of governors of Georgia while she was alive to three:  Sonny Perdue, Nathan Deal, and the current one, Brian Kemp.  Sonny went on to be US Secretary of Agriculture, and I'm not sure what Nathan Deal is doing at the moment, although I believe he doesn't live far from here.

Our congressman is Dr. Rich McCormick, who won his election handily.  As for our newest Senator, that's the one we're going to have to wait for.  It'll be some time before we know who that is, as there's a runoff and we'll have to go back to vote again in December.  And until then we'll have to endure a huge amount of campaign ads, because this entire country is looking at Georgia.  Control of the Senate the next two years is all up to who we vote for.

Anyway, it might be interesting some day to look back on this time and see who it is that is the governor and representative and so on.  When I was Maddie's age, Ronald Reagan was President, and my very first time voting - the day I turned eighteen was the day before the Presidential election in 1988.  I was pretty excited to go vote that day, and have voted in every election since then.  Maddie's first voting experience will be in this very next election, so she'll be casting her vote for the next President.  We'll see who that is, of course, and who is actually running.  Hopefully before all that starts, we can have a little peace, politically.  It's been pretty rough the last few years, both sides being pretty nasty.

Moving on!  It was a long day, of course.  We're watching a tropical storm approach, and her name is Nicole.  There haven't been as many hurricanes this year, although Hurricane Ian did hit Florida very hard in September.  Usually we're up to the later letters in the alphabet by now, or starting new with names like Alpha and Beta.  So there's one positive spin.  This storm is heading towards the east coast of Florida, and looks as if it will affect us here.  We certainly need the rain, though not the wind so much.

We said our prayers tonight, and we went to bed shortly after watching another movie.  We've been watching a few of these Hallmark movies lately, like "The Christmas Train" and "Pumpkin Pie Wars."  Mom's enjoying them, and it gives Nana something to watch.  They're seasonal fun.

Tonight we read, of course, moving forward with "The Light Fantastic."  Maddie was cracking up at the names of certain places on the Discworld, such as "Your Finger You Fool."

Here's the passage that had us laughing:

“The forest of Skund was indeed enchanted, which was nothing unusual on the Disc, and was also the only forest in the whole universe to be called -- in the local language -- Your Finger You Fool, which was the literal meaning of the word Skund.

The reason for this is regrettably all too common. When the first explorers from the warm lands around the Circle Sea travelled into the chilly hinterland they filled in the blank spaces on their maps by grabbing the nearest native, pointing at some distant landmark, speaking very clearly in a loud voice, and writing down whatever the bemused man told them. Thus were immortalised in generations of atlases such geographical oddities as Just A Mountain, I Don't Know, What? and, of course, Your Finger You Fool.

Anyway, we read and then were off to sleep tonight.  Hopefully we'll have some good news tomorrow!
