So we've decided to name our new friend Lester Jr., mainly because the name Lester was already taken by this other possum that visits us, a monster of an opossum that looks roughly the size of a small car. I think we have two opossums, that come up to visit us at night. Mom and I have been fascinated by our new visitors. Now we have yet more pathetic lifeforms joining us.
So what's the deal with skeleton racing? I mean, the first time I heard this name, I imagined a bunch of Harryhausen skeletons chasing argonauts around. So here's a copy-and-paste answer of how the name possibly came to be:
An Englishman named Mr. Child first debuted the metal sled in 1982, leading some to speculate that the sled, which resembled a skeleton, inspired the name of the sport. Others suggest the word “Skele” derives from a poorly translated anglicization of the Norwegian word “Kjaelke,” meaning toboggan or sled.
Basically, it's a sled that you hop on and go downhill head-first. So... an anti-luge. Anyway, we were watching this event tonight quite a bit, and it's funny that the next day we were talking with another friend who was watching the same thing, all of us talking excitedly about last night's skeleton race, which is much more exciting to us than the Super Bowl!
Anyway, we were cheering for the athlete from the US Virgin Islands, who was just happy to be there. It's great to live vicariously through some of these folks. I suppose at this point, the closest I could come to competing might be curling or something like that. Anyway, we were watching that tonight for a bit.
I was out shopping today, trying to get a few things from the grocery store and regretting my journey instantly. Firstly, there are still no frozen pizzas. This is the second time I've been out to get these frozen pizzas, the first time going to a few different grocery stores without success. The other thing not available were the frozen chicken nuggets. I have no idea what's going on here! Two of my destinations today were jam-packed with people as if there were some sort of crazy doorbuster sale, but it was just a Saturday afternoon. The Valentine's section looked as if it had been looted by violent Valentine's Day supporters, crashing into the aisles and grabbing whatever they could in some desperate battle. Maddie and I went to a local drug store and were able to find a few things there that we can hand out at church tomorrow, and it wasn't that crowded there. Another great reason to support small businesses.
I had a little work to do today, and we were also memorizing lines and printing a lot of those Valentine's Day cards we made up so that all the kids could have them tomorrow at KidPak. It was a decent day, although we didn't go anywhere as usual, or do anything super fun. We are still pretty much in quarantine, watching over our houseguest. One funny thing we've been entertained by is how she's suddenly become interested in snowboarding. I mean, we like it too. But of all the programming to keep her occupied, that seems to do the trick! We have that on the television throughout the day to keep her occupied, as puzzles, books, computers or largely anything else don't seem to work as well.
We continued our Kingdom Keepers book tonight, and then said our prayers afterwards, getting to bed a little early. We all jumped in bed with a running start, just like we were jumping on to a skeleton sled!
Only... the frog prince was back! For those of you who may not be familiar with the frog prince, it's been an ongoing running joke in our family and tonight, Maddie put her head down on the pillow to go to sleep when suddenly...
Yes, it's Valentine's Day season, and he's back!
