Tonight in jazz class, Daddy heard the girls dancing to a particular song, "Say You'll Be There." And here's where he got excited: Madison is dancing to a song by the Spice Girls!
He later asked her if she had any idea who sang that song, and she didn't know. Ah, the joys of parenthood, introducing your child to the finer cultural experiences in life! We got home afterwards, and over a small meal, Daddy was playing a few Spice Girls music videos, and then on top of that their appearance at the London Olympics in 2012. Spice up your life, indeed!
But the music videos didn't stop there. Madison wanted to see the Go-Go's song, "We Got the Beat" again, which she danced to last year. And that led to "Our Lips are Sealed," which then led to Cyndi Lauper's videos "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" and "Time After Time." Which led to basically a complete 80's music video fest that Mommy and Daddy were probably more into than she was. Don't you miss the old days when MTV would play music videos? Or maybe it's just that we miss the day when they played music by these 80's performers we love so much. We went through Huey Lewis and the News, and Peter Gabriel and a few more before realizing it was bedtime for Madison.
We were hoping to stay up with her long enough to see Nana and Ba-Ba. They left this morning at 7:30 am, and joined the rest of the evacuation traffic. It turned out to be an epic journey, longer than the one Frodo and Sam went on.
It didn't help that GA DOT decided to close down a lane of traffic for a construction project, in the middle of an evacuation. Let me repeat that, just in case you didn't understand it fully. Georgia's DOT closed down a road to one lane during an emergency evacuation, in order to do road work. To call this stupid would be an insult to stupid people. Traffic was backed up at that point for many, many miles. Nana and Ba-Ba are still on the road. We were talking to them throughout their journey, offering our apologies for our state's moronic Department of Transportation.
They're on their way though. The news of the day though is that so is Irma. Hurricane Irma shifted west, and now it is projected to come straight up the heart of Florida, following I-75 into Georgia, and then moving through Northeast Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Kentucky. That's the projected path at the moment though - this storm has been disobeying all the prognostications so far, and the smarter meteorologists are the ones who have been admitting they can't possibly know until it is much, much closer. This time tomorrow, we'll know for certain.
Much talk is being made of the islands already devastated by Irma. Barbuda is
In the meantime, the Florida Keys are emptying. Daddy and Mommy were there. Daddy spent a few nights in Marathon, an island about half-way between Miami and Key West. I remember the bridge there that got destroyed in the 1935 hurricane, the one where they filmed "
There was a bar and grill there, the Hurricane Bar and Grill. I remember the black lighting in there, and the colored cups and decorations. I wonder how the Hurricane Bar and Grill will hold up as an actual hurricane comes? Will they rethink their name?
Everyone is supposed to clear out of the Florida Keys, and this makes sense, as the elevation is five feet. Five feet above sea level, and the waves coming from this hurricane are much higher than that. Certain Keys will be literally under water. Daddy once read a book, "Storm of the Century," which was about the Labor Day hurricane that struck the Keys in 1935. It was a terrifying book. It's still the strongest hurricane to ever hit the US mainland. Hopefully everyone will get out of there. Even Miami Beach is being evacuated.
Nana and Ba-Ba are getting out of Florida, so that's good. Hopefully they'll be here soon - they've got to be exhausted from such a long drive. But they'll get rest here, and they'll be safe.
We may have to ride this out on Sunday or Monday as the hurricane chases everyone north. But it won't be anywhere near as intense as what it is now, or will be when it strikes the southern coast of Florida. Tonight we prayed for everyone in this monster's path.
