Krispy Kreme sure let the wind out of our sails this year by not offering a dozen free doughnuts to those who dress up like pirates. They didn't even offer one free doughnut! We didn't head down there en masse this year, but it was fun while it lasted. We had some good memories with our pirate journeys. That one year we went was incredible, an entire van full of pirates.
Despite the setback, we refused to let this important holiday go by the wayside. Daddy was holding on to a few gifts the last few weeks: one was a pin from the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales." The other item was a bag of Pirates Booty. We set those up with the Disney Infinity Pirate characters on the table, getting the day started on the right foot.
Speaking of which, each morning we pray, and we end with the Lord's Prayer. This morning, because it was Talk-Like-a-Pirate Day, Madison began by saying, "Arrrrr Father..."
She had PE today, and in class she was learning techniques with soccer. She said she scored a few goals, but it's not her favorite sport. We still might go see a soccer game here before it is all said and done. We'll go see that before going to a NFL game, for sure. But when she got home, it wasn't too much later that Daddy came home early for a special viewing of the movie "Pirates! Band of Misfits." We opened the bag of Pirate Booty, and sat down for a fun pirate movie to add to our day.
Madison and Daddy went to piano after this, where we got to talk to Mrs. Pam for the first time since the tropical storm sent a few trees into her house as well. We have something in common for a while now, and there as a bit to talk about. Although the class was there waiting, we touched base about insurance companies and tree removals, and being homeless. It's a big deal, and it's happening a lot lately.
Speaking of which, the island of Dominica was destroyed by Hurricane Maria, which has actually intensified as of this writing to speeds of 175 miles per hour. Simultaneously, a devastating earthquake has struck nearby Mexico City, a 7.1 earthquake that struck deep, affecting a very large area. It's been pretty close to apocalyptic in that region lately. We're still looking at Maria, watching her very carefully. I'm sure a lot of people are, especially those in Puerto Rico and St. Croix tonight. It's going to be an awful night there.
We prayed for them tonight. Before bed, we read from a few pirate-themed books: a pirate devotional and two books "How I Became a Pirate" and "Pirates Don't Change Diapers." Both are classics, and I'm not sure why either hasn't won the Pulitzer Prize yet. Seriously, they were both a lot of fun, as they were the last time we read them - which may have been last September 19th.
We started a new Nancy Drew book tonight, by Madison's request. It's another mystery involving zucchinis, and already the suspects are present and the detective work is starting. Something strange is going on in the neighborhood, and Ms. Drew is going to figure it out!
