Back to ballet we went tonight, where during the last few minutes the door to the classroom was open - and Daddy got to peek inside to see a rehearsal of the upcoming recital. Madison was once again dancing to "The Skater's Waltz" along with her friends in class. They were all doing well, but clearly there was a spring break that just happened, and there was also a bit of catching up to do!
Regardless, she is showing signs of improvement, almost as much as she is with tennis. For example, she can list and demonstrate the different positions with remarkable ease. She even makes up a few of her own: a "sixth position," where she puts her feet together in an odd way - just for fun. But her fifth position is good, according to Mommy. It's not an easy one for kids to learn to begin with, but Madison seems to have it down pretty well already.
This weekend we're going to Easterland again. Of course, Madison knows the real meaning of Easter - this is always the struggle of these holidays. But she seems to have a level head, balancing the fun with the true meaning of what the day is all about. We'll be decorating eggs soon, and yes, watching "Rise of the Guardians" as well. It's hard to pin down what holiday to center this movie around, as you have Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny (E. Aster Bunnymund) working together with the other Guardians. We're leaning towards Easter, as we have a ton of Christmas movies already and not much with Easter's fantasy side.
The movie is a neat concept - we saw "Rise of the Guardians" with Madison when it came out a few years ago, and everyone enjoyed it. It's also probably the best interpretation of the Easter Bunny that you can find.
This is a real man's bunny rabbit, complete with a weaponized boomerang, and an ammunition belt of sorts, and what looks like tribal tattoos on his fur. Add to this that Wolverine himself does the voice, and you've got yourself an action-packed Easter special!
As a kid, it was somehow easier to picture Santa than the Easter Bunny. The rabbit thing is just sort of vague, isn't it? I mean, it's hard to fathom a ginormous floppy bunny rabbit with a basket of eggs, and somehow make that on the same level of cool as Santa.
Santa's got the sleigh, the workshop, the reindeer and all sorts of magic. The rabbit has always been just that: a rabbit. The ones in malls look creepy, and so it's hard to picture a rabbit standing up on two feet, walking up to you. I think Rankin and Bass did the best job with their animated movies, but that's been about it for Easter. The only animated Easter Bunny I remember between the Rankin and Bass stuff and "Rise of the Guardians" happened in "Nightmare Before Christmas."
Bunny! This is one of those words that Mommy and Daddy will blurt out from time to time, which is from the scene you see above. "Bunny!"
Anyway, the point is, in regards to the fantasy side of this holiday, it's got a long ways to go if it wants to catch up with Christmas. "Rise of the Guardians" was a step in the right direction at least. And we'll pop in Rankin-Bass' "Peter Cottontail" just for fun too.
More in a bit, including a picture of our visit to the most horrifying bunny rabbit of all...
