So with a flip of the calendar, we see the flip of another tail on Madison's Weeki Wachee calendar - it's January now for sure, and just to keep in that mermaid spirit of things, Madison had a "Barbie in a Mermaid Tale Fest" today, watching the two movies back to back.
Surf's up! Ah, such is the life of a vacationing student. Soon, she'll be back to work at school, and the various practices afterwards. In fact, we went to bed very early tonight, as we did last night, just to get used to that schedule again. Of course, Madison trudges down the hallway earlier now too - though this morning she did sleep in a bit. The reasoning for sleeping in this morning was the light: there wasn't any outside. Sunrise was scheduled for the same time it usually is, however, the clouds were running interference and keeping things nice and dim for we slow risers. Madison got a good night's sleep last night.
We've been taking down Christmas tree ornaments and wreaths and Nutcrackers and music and DVDs and ... you get the drift. This is an intensive project, but we're nearly done by the day's end. The hold-up: Daddy's health took a small dip today. Maybe that flu shot was kicking in, or maybe it's a simple cough. Or maybe it's the weather. More on the weather in a moment, but as for Daddy's health: it's not too bad. We're not talking major flu symptoms: I've seen those before. But the cough and fever and gag reflex are all there. Daddy moved things about today, just a bit slower. HATE that.
Now, on to the topic of it being cold outside. Winter announced itself tonight in a major way. The winds were huge, howling like something you'd hear in a movie. The empty trees swung back and forth, barely anchored by their extensive root systems. It was a whopper of a wind, and quite a plunge in the temperature too: it will be nineteen degrees in the morning. And next week, it will be in the single digits. Madison has never felt that before... but is about to!
Speaking of "about to," Daddy is going back to work tomorrow, as we set up for a new series again. Excalibur is starting soon again, where we have knights, princesses, kings and kingdoms - and even a dragon perhaps on stage. This was somewhat of a controversy, as Daddy probably would avoid that part. But the series should be fun, and maybe it's a good excuse to finally take Madison to go see Medieval Times. This may or may not happen. My big thing against Medieval Times is that they actually portray people getting killed time and again, while everyone in the audience cheers. I think that was optional - that is to say, they let the audience choose at the beginning: fatality or non-fatality. I'm not entirely sure if I'd want Madison seeing this right now, even though the rest of that theme seems to be a fun excursion.
Madison was reading more today, which is always good. She had her Marvel books and her Tag books too. She was also helping with the ornaments here and there, although we were more in favor of her sitting down to watch television while Mommy and Daddy held all the more delicate ornaments.
So we're starting the fast soon, and Daddy was trying to explain the concept to Madison. Through it all, Madison decided she'd give up candy for twenty-one days, part of what's known as a "Daniel Fast." Don't knock the results, of course: Daniel was visited by an angel afterwards with quite an announcement. Anyway, the topic of fasting is actually a bit tougher than I imagined, so I went with an imaginary conversation between her and God, which went something like this:
Fortunately, Miss Halson will be talking about fasting this upcoming weekend, and probably a whole lot better. We're dedicating the entire Sunday service to this topic. It'll be a big day, the start of our new church-wide fast.
I can't remember how many years we've been doing this as a church in January, but it's a predictable season each year, and a good one too. And this time, Madison is joining in for the first time, giving up candy for a month. This is actually a pretty big sacrifice, believe it or not: she's been reaching into that candy bowl pretty frequently this past week. Of course, so has Daddy. That supply is nearly all gone, just in time for Sunday, really. No need to have that sort of temptation around, right? Might as well hork it all down!

Madison: "I'm giving up candy for twenty-one days straight."
God: "You're giving up candy… for ME?"
Madison: "Yep. And I'm going to read my Bible and pray more too."
God: "NO WAY! You'd do that… for ME? Whoa!"
Madison: "Yes, that's what I'm going to do!"
God: "You must really love me a lot to do something like that."
Madison: "I sure do!"
