So the ONE Marriage Conference came to an end, with Daddy the photographer having taken roughly eight squillion photos of happy couples wearing the same feather boas and heart-shaped sunglasses. It was a good conference for couples as always, one that Daddy and Mommy never get to go to though. We're usually working it in some way. Like today, for example...
The 'in betweens' of the day were spent prepping for tomorrow's service, as the show must go on. Tomorrow, we'll be showing clips from the movie "Inside Out," which of course is our theme for the series. We were supposed to start with the Star Wars series tomorrow, but the fire marshal changed all that. Still, tomorrow will be a good service, as we've found some good clips to share, and a good message over all that mixes a bit of review with a bit of 'staying positive no matter what.'
The 'oh no' comes from the fact that a Supreme Court Justice passed away today. This is seriously a bad moment for the country, one that millions and millions of people are worried about, and filled with fear. Count Daddy in that mix. Our country is in for a tumultuous year, certainly. There is a very gloomy spirit now.
Madison is not feeling 100% today. She has the sniffles, so we just might keep her home tomorrow from church. We'll see how it goes tomorrow.
Today, she was finishing piano, playing video games and watching "Monster High" for a bit. She still has her dolls and her like of the monsters that goes back to October of 2014 or so. In fact, there's that game she recently downloaded on the X-box without asking Daddy... yeah, that was a fun conversation. She knows not to do that anymore.
Meanwhile, Daddy is downloading a couple of old pinball games off the X-box, games he used to play in college. We got the Addams Family game and Circus Voltaire, both legendary pinball games in my opinion. But for "research" for an upcoming series, the next one we're downloading is "Fish Tales." That one was in the North Georgia College game room area, and it will bring back memories just hearing all the sounds from that game.
Anyway, it's been a long day. After the conference, we're all a bit tired. We read some more from "Mary Poppins" tonight, the original PL Travers book. Mommy found this great copy of the book in hard cover last week, and it'll be neat to read the original text.
But we're going to bed early tonight, because everyone's exhausted. We'll make it up to you hopefully with this quick message that Daddy typed up, one that sums up tomorrow's message:
KidPak Adventures: Hooked on a Feeling
Inside Out
CUE TRACK: 1 Inside Out Soundtrack
CUE SLIDE: “ HOOKED ON A FEELING”
HOST: “Hello everyone – this has been an amazing series so far, pretty much inspired by the movie ‘Inside Out.’”
CUE SLIDE: “INSIDE OUT”
HOST: “Has anyone seen it yet?”
Let audience respond.
HOST: “It’s a great movie. But I have to tell you, this series has been pretty amazing too. We’ve had lots of laughs, and some great memories. They just fill me with such joy… “
CUE SLIDE: “ JOY”
HOST: “Oh, there she is. Joy! You know Joy, right? She’s that emotion we all want to keep around all the time. Who here wants to have joy?”
Let audience answer.
HOST: “Right! Ever since we were born, that’s the emotion we’re all wanting to keep in the forefront. Everyone wants to be happy. But as you know, there are those other emotions that keep popping in from time to time too. In fact, rather than tell you, let’s just meet some of the emotions we all share inside.”
CUE VIDEO 1: (0:31 - 4:47)
CUE SLIDE: “ HOOKED ON A FEELING”
HOST: “So there they are. You met Joy. But then there’s another emotion called Fear.”
CUE SLIDE: “FEAR”
HOST: “We met Fear last time. We learned that Fear protects us from danger. And that a Fear of God is what keeps us from doing things that we know are wrong. But what other emotions were there?”
CUE SLIDE: “ANGER”
HOST: “Oh yes, Anger. Anger is that one that likes to take charge some times. We learned a few messages ago that everyone feels anger. But as you just saw, sometimes it’s best to let the other emotions lead the way. Who can tell me – what was the name of the green emotion?”
CUE SLIDE: “ DISGUST”
HOST: “ That’s right. Disgust. Disgust protects us from poisonous situations, and sort of like Fear, Disgust reminds us that sin is …well, disgusting! Finally, there’s that blue emotion. What’s her name?”
CUE SLIDE: SADNESS
HOST: “Sadness, right. To begin with in this movie, nobody knows what the purpose of Sadness really is. But we learned something valuable here, and all the other emotions learn the same thing in this movie: every emotion has a purpose.”
CUE SLIDE: POINT ONE – EVERY EMOTION HAS A PURPOSE
HOST: “There is a great scripture in the Bible that I want to share with you. It’s one that pretty much lets us know that there is a time to feel all these emotions.”
CUE SLIDE: “ECCLESIASTES 3:4”
HOST: “There is a time to weep. And there’s a time to laugh. There is a time to be sad. And there’s a time to dance.”
CUE SLIDE: “HOOKED ON A FEELING”
HOST: “God made us all with these emotions, and it’s okay to weep. It’s okay to feel disgusted. It’s okay to be angry too. We talked about Jesus being angry, and being disgusted with the Pharisees, and being sad when Lazarus died. The point is, when you feel emotions well up inside, it’s okay to have those feelings.”
CUE SLIDE: “RILEY”
HOST: “In the movie ‘Inside Out,’ the main character is Riley, and inside her are these emotions. Of course, she wants Joy to be in charge the whole time.”
CUE SLIDE: “REAL ESTATE SIGN”
HOST: “But her life is about to go through some big changes. Like, moving to a new place. And as you’re about to see, it’s going to be quite a challenge keeping an emotion of Joy.”
CUE VIDEO 2: (8:14 – 12:17)
CUE SLIDE: “HOOKED ON A FEELING”
HOST: “So Riley is going through some challenging stuff right now. She has all these emotions popping in wanting to take charge, but which is the one that keeps stepping up to make it all work out?”
CUE SLIDE: “JOY”
HOST: “ Joy. Despite all the bad news that keeps coming, what does Riley keep doing? She keeps trying to make the best of things that she can. Over and over again you see it. The house looks bad, but sure enough, maybe the room will be good. When the room isn’t great, perhaps it’ll look better after you decorate it. When Mom and Dad look stressed, it’s time for some hockey play-time. When Dad has to leave for work, why not go eat pizza? When the pizza is bad, why not look back on the road trip out here. Over and over again, you see Riley doing her best to have a good attitude. And if that’s your second point.”
CUE SLIDE: “GIVE THANKS IN ALL THINGS”
HOST: “ Give thanks in all things. This can be so difficult to do. But the Bible is clear about how we should feel at the end of the day. Let’s look what it says!”
CUE SLIDE: “1 THESSALONIANS 5:18”
HOST: “Give thanks no matter what happens.”
CUE SLIDE: “ HOOKED ON A FEELING”
HOST: “Wait. Do what? What if I have a family member that is really sick? Or what if I am having a hard time at school? Or what if my family is broke? Or what if, what if, what if…”
HOST stops a moment.
HOST: “You see, there’s the problem there. We’re letting those other emotions take the driver’s seat. And while it’s okay to feel those emotions, it’s important for us to do our best to keep the best attitude we can. Let me show you why, in this next clip here.”
CUE VIDEO 3: (15:45 – 18:17)
CUE SLIDE: “ HOOKED ON A FEELING”
HOST: “Suddenly, it dawns on Riley that her actions pretty much saved the day. It took a lot of effort for her to come up with solution after solution. And maybe it seemed kind of hopeless after a while. I mean, every time she tried to change the situation to something good, it just kept going downhill."
HOST: "But it wasn't pointless. Someone was watching! That's when Riley realized she was doing good, and helping her parents after all."
HOST: "Now many of you face situations like Riley all the time. It may not be moving to a new house, but I'm pretty sure Joy is not in charge ALL the time in your household. Sure, Joy is there. But what I'm saying is how many of you have sisters or brothers who fuss? Or how many people have parents that nag on you? Like any other household, growing up, my household had all the other emotions too: we had anger, fear, disgust, and yes, sadness too, all under one roof."
HOST: "So when bad stuff happens, how many of you do what Riley did here? I mean seriously, what kind of person are you when you walk in the room?"
CUE SLIDE: "JOY"
HOST: "Are you full of Joy, someone who other people look forward to seeing?"
CUE SLIDE: "ANGER"
HOST: "Or are you Anger, someone everyone is careful to not upset?"
CUE SLIDE: "HOOKED ON A FEELING"
HOST: "Your emotions are a big deal. And however you act really affects how others feel too. Riley's mom felt better about things because of what Riley did there. But if you're getting into fights at school, or goofing off, or talking back to your teacher, how do you think that'll make your parents feel?"
HOST: "Let's hit the next point."
CUE SLIDE: "EMOTIONS ARE CONTAGIOUS"
HOST: "Emotions are contagious. If you're trying to brighten everything up, you're just the kind of person I like to hang around. But if you're always darkening the atmosphere, then I'm sorry - you need to start acting brighter."
CUE SLIDE: "HOOKED ON A FEELING"
HOST: "It's Valentine's Day, and the world really likes talking about that definition of love where guys get girls cards and flowers and chocolate - but the real meaning of love is something we talk about here all the time: putting others first. Riley tried to do just that with her actions here, showing love - a Fruit of the Spirit. She had good fruit."
HOST: “So the question is, what kind of fruit are you showing? Are you showing love to everyone? It’s good to show love to those you know – your family and friends. But what about those others? You know Jesus told us to love even our enemies. It doesn’t mean you have to go hang out with them or anything, but our attitudes should be right. Show love, no matter what happens, and no matter who happens. Not just on Valentine’s Day, but all year round. That's the best emotion of all."
HOST: "Let us pray."
