Haul Rickshaw!

Madison was creating a vehicle with her LEGO blcoks, and Mommy noticed that it resembled a rickshaw, with two minifigures going for a ride - not pulled by anyone quite yet.  Madison didn't recognize the word rickshaw yet though, so once again this incredible useful tool, the iPad, came in handy.  Daddy showed her a few videos wth rickshaws in China, touring Beijing.  We had an opportunity to ride on one while there, but it would have had to have been first thing in the morning on our first day, and we were anticipating a bit of jet lag.  That, in retrospect, was wise, as our travel time was twenty-nine hours due to delays, storms and low jet fuel.  We arrived in Beijing at something like 3 am - I don't remember the exact time.  When you're traveling around the world, time sort of becomes more of a concept.  The only thing you can count on is the rising and setting sun.

So anyway, Madison knows what a rickshaw is now.  And it just so happens that one of her spelling words is "haul."  She read it in a story last night about hauling wood.  Mommy was describing what the word meant, and it just went well with the rickshaw.  But it also went well with our neighbors across the street - first thing this morning, we opened the garage door, and they had a U-Haul truck sitting in their driveway.  So the word "haul" really got some defnition today.

It was an epic search for LEGO costumes today.  There is a chain of stores called "The Spirit of Halloween" across the state, a sort of nomadic series of stores that finds different locations each fall season - like the carnival in "Something Wicked This Way Comes."  Anyway, we dropped by the local location on Monday to see about a LEGO costume.  They said the costumes would be here on Wednesday afternoon at the latest, and they would call us.

Neither happened.

Daddy drove by there, and rather than say something like, "I'm sorry," the manager blamed the computer, which of course is evil.  It may even be haunted.  But I digress.  The point is, if you want to be a synergistic leader, you have to accept responsibility for bone-headed things like this.  So she tells me they have a few costumes down at the Mall of Georgia, "across from PF Chang's."

Only that location is "across from PF Chang's" in the same way that the entire rest of the mall is located "across from PF Chang's."  I couldn't find it after circling the mall three times during lunchhour.

Fortunately, Party City was there for me.  The Gainesville location did not have the costumes, but they called the Mall of Georgia location, which did.  And Daddy even found that location rather quickly.  And they even had the costumes there for me when I arrived!

Eventually, I did locate the "The Spirit of Halloween" store, and got three costumes.  They knew what I went through to get there, how the Gainesville location failed me, and they ask if I have any coupons.  Customer service tip #4:  if you know your company is responsible for causing a customer distress, then give the customer credit for a lousy coupon.

Needless to say, we're not pleased with the "The Spirit of Halloween" stores.  For one thing, when you walk into this local location, you hear screams from some thing that's supposed to scare people - it is turned up so much that the sound is distorted.  And it happens every fifteen seconds or so.  That would drive me crazy if I worked there.  Let's rephrase that:  I wouldn't work there.  As a customer, I couldn't wait to get out.  And really, I probably won't be back anyway.

But we did get the LEGO costumes for this weekend.  So yay.

Tonight, Madison had to catch up on a massive amount of homework.  So we didn't go anywhere.  But we did watch "Chicken Little," part of our "25 Movies of Halloween" program.  Reallly, I'm not sure if we're going to get to watch that many, because of all we have planned this month.  We can't wait to look back on this blog a month from now, at all the stuff we were blessed to do.  Except for this day, of course.  I'd rather not remember this one so much!
