What a great October day we had today, and although we started in different directions this morning, it was really quite nice. You can see where Madison started this morning, watching a play the middle school actors had presented based on the story of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow."
Of course, we've recorded here on this blog the connection we have to this classic story, so it was nice that once again Madison got to see a version of it, this one on stage. And done in a fun way, from the way she tells it. She really enjoyed the production.
It was a shortened day at school, and the weather was perfectly a fall day, so Daddy went home early himself to pick the family up and take a drive west. Our destination: pumpkin patches!
Our first stop was Burt's Pumpkin Farm, a place we've been going to since a long time ago, going back to 2008 with Madison, and long before that with Mommy, before the turn of the century!
But here we are now, with Madison thirteen years old, and already driving her own tractor, apparently. And Daddy has turned into a pumpkin. Okay, obviously that's not true - Madison can't drive her own tractor.
Or maybe she can. Anyway, we came on an absolutely perfect day, with the temperature just right and the crowd levels pretty small, given that it was a weekday afternoon. The number of pumpkins there was just enough to make a nice bit of backdrop for pictures, which is what we came for.
Daddy had Mommy pose with Madison for a picture too, right there amidst the sea of orange:
There are a lot of smaller-sized pumpkins left, which you can see here below. They all line up, and make for some fascinating patterns of color along the ground.
Madison always looks out for a mini-pumpkin each year, one to take along with her. The larger pumpkin she got a few weeks ago at Kinsey Farms, and here we were at Burt's for the smaller one. We'd go to yet another farm after this to get more pumpkins, but in the meantime, here's Madison with a smaller pumpkin... on her head.
The white pumpkins seem to be getting more popular this year, as there were plenty of these.
And here below is Madison and Mommy kneeling down among some of those larger-sized pumpkins. We always see these pumpkins, and I know people buy them. But I'm thinking of the hassle of getting this into a vehicle, and then out of the vehicle and onto your property wherever you're going to put the thing. And then there's the question of what are you going to do with a pumpkin that is bigger than your child? Anyway, we haven't bought a super large pumpkin yet, but here's Mommy and Madison with a few!
Just thinking about trying to pick one of those up makes me want to visit a chiropractor as soon as possible. No, the best plan is to stick to the smaller-sized pumpkins today:
As you can see, Madison was dressed up for the day, as was Mommy. Madison wore her Star Wars porg pumpkin shirt, along with the cat ears that she's worn occasionally.
Eventually she found herself a nice pumpkin, a smaller one. Over by the one side of the area, there's a covered section that has a lot of gourds and tiny pumpkins. Madison found what she was looking for over there.
We had a great time there today, and the destination is just part of the journey of course. On the way, we were checking out the leaves, and of course we had our Steve Martin music playing, along with other tunes we've come to associate with fall.
And we weren't there for just pumpkins either, of course. Mommy picked up some local honey, and we got some peanut brittle as well. We resisted the urge to pick up Indian corn, but it is all hanging up there, and looks so great.
Next to Burt's is a covered bridge that we like to pose for pictures at. Mommy and Madison were happy to stop there and say cheese, and I think we wound up with some pretty good pictures at the bridge. I have a beautiful family!
We stop at Burt's some pictures, but we always make sure we stop at Bradley's to buy a few pumpkins, and some muscadine slushies. Also, Madison was there to learn how to do some corn shelling!
Bradley's dad was there, and he set up Madison with a device made in 1903, one that takes the kernels off the corn for you.
Madison was trying that for a few rounds, and it was somewhat addictive.
Also, it was easier than the way she was doing it earlier this year at the Northeast Georgia History Center. She used another device to grind the corn, and in a much easier way, she had a lot more ground up quite a bit more quickly.
We were talking with Bradley's dad for a bit, taking pictures and looking through the shop inside. Daddy got a pair of socks that has a familiar face on it. It has really been a theme this year - in fact, you can see, perhaps, Big Foot even here at Bradley's Pumpkin Patch, checking out the pumpkins.
Daddy got some Big Foot socks here today, just because they're fun. And soon, we were on our way home. We had enough time when we got home, so we also watched a movie tonight: "Wallace & Gromit: Curse of the Were-Rabbit." We adore this movie, and what made it even better was that Mommy found some pumpkin flavored Wensleydale Cheese!
We were munching on all kinds of cheese and crackers as we watched the movie tonight, such a nice ending to a wonderful day! We read tonight, we prayed tonight, and we were thankful for a perfect fall day!
