Madison had a really huge day today, one just crammed with fun stuff, and it all started with her school field trip. The entire sixth grade at the school went down to Discover Mills, and there they visited Medieval Times!
She was on the red and yellow team, supporting a particular knight in his chivalrous efforts to win the day, and guess what? Her team won! The kids learned about chivalry, and what that even means. And they all got crowns to wear as well. We gave Madison a little extra money, and she was able to buy a flag that represented her team.
It's a dinner show, or in this case a lunch show, and Madison had a Medieval meal, which was potatoes and a chicken leg, along with garlic bread and cookies. There was no silverware, which was something everyone was looking to: eating with their hands. Madison has never really eaten chicken off the bone before, so this was a new experience, and we're happy to report that she enjoyed her food very much.
The kids cheered and saw jousting, and the choreography of the horses, and all the pageantry of the royals there in the king's court. Madison is pretty firm: jousting is not something she'd ever like to try. And Daddy is right there with her. She'd like to try being a princess though, and she's doing a good job so far, still wearing her crown!
The other thing we did tonight was go off to see the wizard!
This was the GTA play we've been looking forward to the most. We've seen their versions of "Beauty and the Beast," "Mary Poppins," and "Crazy for You," and all of these were outstanding. So we knew this one was going to be really good, and it didn't let us down.
Here's Dorothy with her aunt and uncle, I'm assuming not long after the events of the story. One of the challenges of making this a play is the fact that you have one stage, and that characters are following a yellow brick road. Or another challenge: there's a tornado! But the stage was redesigned on a spinning turntable, and the end results were just right for this sort of story.
All three of us sat in our usual seats, and Daddy got to wear his "Wizard of Oz" tie as well! This show's entire run has been sold out for quite some time, so we're glad we got the season tickets, although the remaining plays this season aren't anything we'd go with Madison to see. So this was the last big play of the season for us with GTA, and ironically only the second. Still, it was magnificent. The main four characters were just perfect, and their costumes were fantastic as well. One thing that Mommy and Daddy enjoyed was the inclusion of the "Jitterbug" song, the one made famous by being deleted from the original version of the movie.
The witch and her flying monkeys were perfectly cast and costumed, and the audience was right there with all the characters on stage through the entire production, waiting for certain lines, or singing to themselves all of the famous songs. It was a wonderful evening in Oz.
We got outside, and that's when it was suddenly cold. Over the course of the production, the temperature plummeted outside, and it suddenly felt like winter was approaching again. It's been a fairly warm fall, but frigid temperatures are approaching next week. That's okay.
We had a great day, and it was a late night too. We're back in our beds under our covers, nice and warm. There's no place like home!
