Jot Em Down

So recently, we found out something that had puzzled us for a while.  It probably puzzles a lot of people.  The main road that goes by our community is called Jot Em Down.  In order to get home, we drive down Jot Em Down road, and it's one of those things we tell people when they want to come over and don't know the directions.

US:  "Take Jot Em Down Road."
THEM:  "Jot Em Down Road?"
US:  "Yes, Jot Em Down Road."
THEM:  "Why's it called Jot Em Down Road?"
US:  "?"

We've had no idea until recently.  Fortunately, we talked to a woman who's family owned a lot of property in this area, and she explained it to us thusly:  the road used to be called "God's Road."  Which has a nice ring to it.  Except for the curves though - I don't think you want to have an account on God's Road.  Also, if it were in fact God's Road, you could never widen it, as it would need to remain straight and narrow.

ANYWAY, when it was paved, it changed names.  Here's why it changed to Jot Em Down Road:  A man started up a store at the corner of what is now Keith's Bridge Road and Jot Em Down Road.  This store he named the Jot Em Down Store.  The reason he named it this is because that happened to be the name of an fictional store on a radio show:  The Lum and Abner Show.

This was a radio show that went on from 1931 to 1954, and took place around a store called the Jot Em Down store.  Neither Mommy or Daddy have ever heard of this show, which is amazing, because we tend to like vintage things like this.  In fact, today, we listened to a few episodes.  Sure enough, it all takes place at the Jot Em Down Store.

The local resident who opened the store here along our road liked this show so much, he named his store the Jot Em Down Store.  The store no longer exists, nor does the original building.  But there is a new cinderblock building in its place, and this is all right next to the school that Madison goes to.  It's the only thing that remains as evidence of why a rather lengthy stretch of road is called an odd name Jot Em Down Road.

What makes it even more interesting is that there's a Settingdown Road nearby.  That, from what I understand, is an Indian name, as is the Settingdown Creek nearby as well.

ANYWAY, it's been a fun discovery, as we've always wondered why this road we drive every day has such a unique name.  And now we know!  And now... so do you!

News for today:  it's cold.  So cold, it was actually snowing this morning.  There were flurries, which was surprising to many people.  This weather is so left field, and even tonight the wind is roaring and winter is reminding us rather harshly in CAPITAL LETTERS that WINTER IS NOT OVER YET.

Mommy and Daddy went to the chiropractor today, and then Cracker Barrel, quite grateful for a big fire in their fireplace.  There was an incredible corn beef and cabbage dinner that Mommy ordered, just in time for St. Patrick's Day.

We got home in time for Madison.  Daddy rushed out to get her at the bus stop, as it was frigid cold.  We ran back inside, not wanting to hang out outside for long.  Madison did a bit of math homework, and got her new vocabulary words, and together we all made a decision about her upcoming electrical project.  It should be fun to make!  You'll see it.  Madison did some piano, and got an email from Mrs. Pam about her future recital piece.  Madison wants to do a song from the movie, "The Greatest Showman," so I imagine we'll be hearing either "Tightrope" or "A Million Dreams" over and over again on the piano.  She's excited about playing that one.

Afterwards, it was time for ballet.  Daddy was in the car putting the final touches on this new Incredible Hero series, which should be pretty good this summer.  Meanwhile, Madison was dancing on her toes inside.  She says it's getting easier, although for Daddy, it seems impossible.  Mommy was shopping for new costuming for Descendants characters in the meantime, and when Daddy and Madison got home, we all got together on the couch for another episode of "A Series of Unfortunate Events."  It was later, but we decided to go for it anyway.  Madison enjoyed it, and is sort of getting into the dynamics of the entire show.  She loves the baby, Sunny.

Which is something we hope the rest of this week is like.  It sounds so cold out there right now!
