Tough Day

Today is my mother's birthday - we were calling her early today, and she's in Canada actually at the moment, on vacation up in Nova Scotia.  I had a bottle of Clearly Canadian in her honor!  But we'll get to gather to celebrate when she gets back, I'm sure - celebrating birthdays and maybe even a bit of a graduation party for David Austen, who graduated from college classes recently.  I might go back to college some day soon, the idea being to get my masters degree.

Maddie had school today, and things are going okay.  She's enjoying all the classes somewhat, although ELA is her least favorite presently.  Which is a shame, as she likes to write and certainly read.  We're reading through the book "Leia" tonight, and we've read every single night ever since we first met.  Bedtime reading is a valuable tradition.  I've always thought it strengthened her own vocabulary and reading skills, and it very well may have.  It just doesn't make you excited to do analysis of books like "The Crucible."  Ironically, the GTA has a stage play of "The Crucible" coming up in February.  We thought briefly about how that may be a class enhancing experience.  But then again, we were thinking, does any one of us actually want to voluntarily see that play?  That being said, we're good with the plays we have already bought tickets for, which are numerous actually.  Coming up soon, we have two in October, one in November, one towards the end of December.  Lots of fun.

Tonight we had taekwondo of course, and Maddie was there for a while, and Mom however was not there.  Mom is now staying the night with Nana, who has taken a dramatic turn for the worse.  It's to looking good at all for her, and we're not sure if George will get here in time to see his mom before she passes.  All this is terrible.  Poor Mom has gone through so much too - she wound up staying up all night, keeping Nana company by her bedside as Nana suffered through the night with extreme pain and long waits for medication.  The sufficient medication arrived late, and both Mom and Nana were able to get some rest at around 5am, although not much.

We didn't know this night would be as bad as it was for Mom.  Maddie and I called her up and prayed with her tonight before bed.  After that, I was reading with Maddie and the two of us had the house to ourselves because Mom was spending the night at the assisted living center.  It would be a very difficult night for her, very tough to go through for everyone in that room.
