Slagator or Shwuck

Maddie's making a lot of progress on her gummy bears this week.  And she's making progress with Mason, her new friend that she's been given charge over this semester:

I don't like the way he's staring at us.  His name is Mason, by the way.  Sadly, Maddie did not get to name the baby, which I think could have been a great part of the process.  I could see the names she would have given him now, given that she names every plush friend in her collection at home.  I'm not sure what she would have named him, as there are so many other names taken by friends in her room.  If it were me in high school, of course, I would have named him either Slagator or Argoblastulus, a reference to an old 80's movie credit scene where a whole lot of celebrities give name suggestions for a new baby, and Dan Aykroyd suggests Slagator, or "Slaggy" for short.  I think Bill Murray suggests "Shwuck."

I suppose this is probably why they don't let the students name the babies, because of ones like me.  Anyway, it was a good day today.  We visited with Nana this morning, and there are some issues related to settling in - maybe she just needs to get used to where her clean clothes are or how to use a shower and big things like that.  But she's eating and she's taking her meds, and that's better than before.

Tonight we had taekwondo, which meant getting to Maddie in the car line early.  While sitting in the car line, I've been reading a new book, "Boom Town," about the latest return to Lake Wobegon, and this of course has inspired some listenings to excerpts from the Prairie Home Companion, which is a welcome return to some classic radio programming, rambling and humorous stories from a small town and wonderful music from standard  and guest performers each week.  It was a great show that Mom and I would always tune in to on Saturdays.  Thanks to Mom, I have a fairly large collection of CDs with material from Lake Wobegon on it.

Taekwondo was leadership tonight, followed by black belt class.  The classes are getting really big.  I mean, we're close to maxed out on room to maneuver around, particularly with all those swinging bo staffs!  It's a great thing to see, given that a couple years ago things were so sparse.  Maddie's moving on, moving forward towards that second degree black belt, which is happening this year.  In the meantime, some of the certificates have arrived from her last and most recent testings.  These come later and later from headquarters.  I'm not sure how they'll look when things shift to the GTMA, or how quickly they'll arrive.  But she'll be a second-degree black belt determined by Master and Mrs. Edge, and that's all that matters really.  I've been watching her train for years now, two years as a black belt already if you can believe that.

Tonight we were watching a few things on television while Maddie was catching up on homework, but after the busy evening, it was time for bed soon afterwards.  We read tonight, from the Discworld and from our devotional.  After that, prayers... and bed!  Time to go to sleep!
