A Little Bit of Pomp

We slept in today, for Maddie the last time she was going to do that for a good bit, given that her virtual week at school is virtually over with.  We had Team Edge practice this morning, so we were over there, Maddie and the others doing really well until that very last run through, which might have been better if they didn't try it!  I say that with a smile - there were a few mess-ups throughout, from instructors to the students, including Maddie, and it was one of those moments where everyone just started on the wrong foot.  But the rest of the practice was great of course, and really solid.  They're doing a fantastic job.

I dropped off another squirrel, and if you're keeping count that's 20.  We need to put little notches or squirrel silhouettes on the side of this cage, as it is a beast when it comes to capturing squirrels.  We released that one over at the church around practice time.

We did visit with Nana afterwards, and we stayed there to watch the coronation of King Charles III together.  Nana has her opinion about the new queen, but otherwise the broadcast was pretty interesting, and certainly a colorful parade of costuming from around the world.  It looked like one of those 60's movies where the United Nations was to assemble on screen, and we needed exaggerated costumes to show where everyone was from.  The clergy costumes were the most outrageous, of course, and then leading the charge were all the traditional costumes from British leadership.  I'm good with that, of course, as that is tradition and this is their nation of course.  And the king's attire was so heavy it looked as if he were burdened heavily by it.  And given the difficulties with his sons, I suppose that's a possibility.  It would be a completely different world, of course, if Lady Diana were still with us.  Regardless, it was a very interesting thing to see, and yes a rare one too, given that the last took place before Mom and I were born, something like 1953 I think.

We left there, and Maddie has a lot of work to do with school, which she was working hard at.  We did take a break tonight to watch the Kentucky Derby, and the lead-up to the race too.  We did something different this year by actually picking our favorites to win the race, and they were as follows:

Dad:  Two Phils

Mom: Angel of Empire

Maddie:  Disarm

These were chosen using the vast equestrian experience the three of us have in this field, which is the equivalent of basically looking at the odds, listening to a few commentators, and of course most importantly, appreciating the names.  I chose "Two Phils" because it reminded me of Groundhog Day.  Maddie just thought the name Disarm was funny, while Mom though Angel of Empire had a pretty cool sounding name.  That's our strategy!  And wouldn't you know it?  If it weren't for the surprise of the race, a horse named Mage, we just might have pulled off a 1-2-3 celebration.  Mage came from out of nowhere - only three races thus far - to pull off a huge win on the biggest horse race of the year.  The end results:

1.  Mage

2.  Two Phils

3.  Angel of Empire

4.  Disarm

So there you go.  We might try this again next year.  We'd never bet actual money, of course, as we would promptly lose all of it.  But it was fun watching the race, and all that ceremony and costuming that goes on around the event.

Tonight's feature flick was "The Amazing Maurice," which we bought using digital credits online, a pretty neat little perk of ordering items during certain times.  The movie itself is based on a Discworld book by Terry Pratchett, of course, and generally speaking it sticks to the storyline that I remember.  It was an entertaining book, and Rincewind and Twoflower have cameos in it too, as does the Discworld, Death, and the Death of Rats.  It was actually an enjoyable version of the book, which so far I'm the only one in the household that has read it.  But we might all read it soon enough, as it was a fun story.

We read tonight from this Kingdom Keepers book, and we said our prayers after that.  Got a big Sunday tomorrow, but today was fun.
