Volcanoes and Slime

Weird Science continued this morning and it was a weird mix of science and Mother's Day put together, but ultimately it worked very well because science gave us a chance to talk about the miracle of life, and sort of walk kids through the months of development a baby goes through before actually being born.  I used some imagery and slides and this worked very well with our message, which had this one central theme to it:  you are not a mistake.  Camille did a fantastic job with this message, and it was super cool because this is her first Mother's Day as a mom herself!

It was a great morning overall, and as you can see above, we had science fair projects galore, from volcanoes to slime to robotic hands to interesting goggles to the legendary CUP OF DIRT.  It was fun!

We didn't get to upstairs where the flower market was because of work downstairs, but it was a fun day for the kids, hopefully.  They were certainly engaged in that first service, really responsive and noisy!  But that just means they're paying attention, and that's all good.

Before leaving, I ordered some Chinese food online, and picked it up to take home for a nice meal together at home where we celebrated Mother's Day together.  We got mom a series of framed pictures of her and Maddie riding Dumbo, and Maddie made a bowl for her, something created with a fabric string that turned out rather well.  After sewing that together, she put a collection of origami flowers in it for a nice presentation.

It was a good day but we're not feeling that well.  Maddie had whatever this is earlier, and now it's our turn, Mom and I.  We're not viciously sick, but it's enough of an annoyance that we decided to stay home this afternoon rather than go out to the movies.  Mom and I took a little nap, and Maddie and I spent some time finishing up again the Guardians of the Galaxy game we have, playing as any of the Guardians characters from Disney Infinity that we could.  It was fun, although we kept getting into throwing matches, which is to say, Maddie greatly enjoys throwing me off of very large cliffs.

Tonight we watched a few episodes of Ultimate Spider-man while Mom was doing some research on Ancestry, which she enjoys doing in her spare time.  We spotted some chipmunks on our back deck, which we haven't seen in a while, but there's a plate of seeds there that we set up and we invited them to help themselves.  Chipmunks are okay because they aren't marauders like the squirrels.  Speaking of which, we're at #25 now.  Twenty-five displaced squirrels.  There was one today that didn't make it - not our fault - but it had died in the road there just about in front of our house.  The end result was nature's clean-up crew, a big buzzard sitting there in our front yard.  We're sort of a bird-watching family, so if we were playing bird bingo, that would have been a pretty big hit, as I'm not sure there's ever been a big old buzzard in our yard before.  I digress.

We read tonight, another chapter from Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and we got to bed on time, sort of.  It'll be another big day tomorrow.  Yes, there's school.  But after that, the big second degree black belt!
