Fossils of the World

Firstly, have we said anything about how cold it suddenly got?  This is mid-August, and our high for the day was something like 68 degrees.  It's also been windy - too windy for kites even!  We set a record for a low temperature today, with a low of 61 degrees.  It feels like a fall day, everyone even a little cold.  It's just so abrupt - nobody saw this coming!

Continuing our fossilized week, as soon as Daddy got home from work, we were painting our fossils we dug up.  Okay, we didn't dig these up - we pour a quick-drying substance into a mold, and waited 24 hours for it to dry in the shape of a trilobite, a crinoid and more.  These are fun words to say, in fact, probably the biggest thing Madison learned throughout this project.  She learned to say the word trilobite over and over again.  Here below, I present our completed science project:

You may have to click on the image to enlarge it - or you can read the descriptions here below:

1.  Trilobites are Paleozoic hard-shelled, segmented members of the phylum Arthropoda.  This one’s name is Trilla.  Since no data exists to suggest what color these unique creatures were, our staff of scientists chose yellow, red and brown.

2.  This is the fossil of a crinoid, marine animals that are said to be colorful.  Madison chose to make hers like a rose, a crinoid boutonnière.

3.  This is a fossilized shark’s tooth.  After painting this one, Madison informed us that this particular shark hasn’t brushed his teeth in quite some time.

4.  This is a fossilized ammonite shell, or possibly a cheese danish.

This was a fun little project we may return to some day, but for the time being, she's familiar with the concept of fossils, and she's also using the word "trilobite" more than she's ever done in her life.  This statement just might be true for me as well, come to think of it.

Madison has just completed her first week at school!  She's brought home new art, graphs, counting assignments, and a newsletter too - this one has a link to her teacher's page, which features all sorts of new things, including occasional pictures.  Today, apparently, was bus safety day - here's a few snaps from the site to share:

It's Bus Safety Day, where the kids learn how to be safe on a bus and take a sacred pledge of Bus Safety, or else that ginormous owl will come to visit them at night.

Okay, I just had to look this up.  I've discovered that his name is "Elvis the Safety Owl."  He certifies schools in a "SOAR" program, "Safely, Orderly And Respectfully."  There are plenty of Elvis the Owl resources online here, including some printable worksheets that I'll have to inflict on Madison now!

Anyway, the point is that school seems to be going along just fine.  Madison seems to be enjoying it, and not stepping in any goose poop.  See earlier dates this week if you missed out on that one.  She likes her teacher, and has been doing exercises related to introducing herself, and of course meeting new faces.  Her teacher seems to be strong in emphasizing reading, and math skills as well.  Madison has been practicing both a lot this summer, so she should be okay there.  So 1st Grade is starting out okay, and we're breathing a sigh of relief.

Time to go eat a cheese danish.  Oh wait, that's an ammonite.
