So we made the long drive home today, made longer of course by our typical stop in Henry County. Of course, by "typical stop," I mean "unplanned county-long traffic jam created by road work that causes three lanes of bumper to bumper traffic the length of roughly thirty or more miles." I'm not entirely sure what "construction work" they are doing at that one solitary bridge in Henry County, but I'm inclined to do some research now, as this is the third time we've spent A LOT of time in that confounded county. Each time we're on our way back and we're thinking we're doing pretty good as far as time goes, and then it's time to enter Henry County. Sorry, Henry County, but your name is now synonymous with "frustratingly long traffic jams."
And of course, this was the weekend that they decided to close THREE lanes of I-85 IN ATLANTA. Yeah, that sounds like a good idea too. Especially for all those suckers coming out of Henry County!
Other than that, the trip home was without incident. We did go through a pretty nifty rain storm that just came out of nowhere, making the sky amazingly dark. You couldn't see through the storm, and yet it wasn't much later that we were all driving out the other side of it. Fortunately, everyone around us was driving with some sense, slowing down dramatically until we could feel our way to the other side.
We made a few stops at rest areas along the way, and also made a stop at our traditional book stores, where we picked up a few dietary books, the latest John Grisham book and a book for Madison.
But other than those things listed above, the trip was pretty ordinary. Which is to say, we're glad we made it home in one piece. So often we take these mundane little journeys for granted, don't we? And yes, I'm complaining about traffic, but at the same time, we did make it home okay.
When we got home, it was nearly time for bed - mainly because we're all rather exhausted. But we did plug in the Veggie Tales Silly Song DVD, just to see Larry the Cucumber sing about Barbara Manatee. Madison did not remember this, but there's Larry carrying around a stuffed manatee, just like Madison has the last few days.
She went to bed earlier tonight, with both manatees at her side. Mommy and Daddy played a bit of Scrabble for a time, but they were soon out like a light. It was a good vacation - pretty inexpensive too! But we definitely did a lot, and had a lot of fun together as a family.
