The weather was amazingly hot today. Nearby at the Villages, the report told us the heat index was 100 degrees. Out on the back lanai this morning, Mommy actually got a little sick from the heat. Despite the fact that it was in the shade, the heat sort of sneaks up on you. It was so hot, in fact, that when Daddy and Madison went to the pool this afternoon, our stay was short. Even soaking in the water, we could still feel that hot sun blazing down on us. Daddy set the timer, just like you would when boiling anything else in water, and the two of us were out of there with not a moment to lose! Madison loves swimming, and really had a great time again - this is her third day of swimming in a row, actually. BUT... we cut it short today, as Daddy and she got back to the golf cart. Yes, Nana and Ba-Ba let us borrow their golf cart, which was a fun ride in itself, after the pool visit at least. The breeze of motion cooled us off, and dried us off fairly quickly too - we went exploring the golf course a bit, just the two of us. We waved at the happy golfers, who must have been in the midst of some sort of endurance golfing match. Seriously, hopefully they all had lots of water with them.
On the way back, Madison had one towel around her body, and one towel over her head, like a Bible character. She turned to Daddy and said, "I'm Mary and you're Joseph." So the two of us stayed in our "donkey" and made the long trip back to Bethlehem, looking for a place to stay. Fortunatley, we found one. Everyone was there, waiting for us, hoping we didn't stay out in the sun too long.
For the reasons stated above, we decided to make our traveling later in the day. For one matter, we wanted to make sure that Mommy was okay. But these sorts of extreme temperatures aren't good for anyone, honestly. Especially for Mommy, Daddy and Madison, who have had such a cool summer up until now. All of the sudden we're here with temperatures feeling 100 degrees, and with that in mind, we need to be careful. Daddy is already a bit sunburned on his shoulders.
Mommy spent her time working on puzzles, and Madison was doing a bit of water coloring. She also did a great piece of art, involving gluing a lot of colored pieces of plastic down, staying between the lines and making the colorful image of a dolphin leaping into the air. We had a tic-tac-toe fest, which is just the sort of thing you do on vacation.
So we ate a nice meal for lunch and filled up before our next big trip - and soon we were off and going. It was about 4:00 when we started our drive down to Orlando, where once again we'd be visiting Disney World. We weren't going to the parks this late, but we did want to try out that other mini-golf course, Fantasia Gardens. This time, there was no wait whatsoever, so we walked right in.
It was our favorite mini-golf course so far. It was all themed around the movie "Fantasia," with dancing hippos, alligators, ostrich ballerinas and even a cameo by Chernobog. The courses make it so that everyone can get a hole in one at one point or another, and sure enough, Madison got herself a hole in one!
Other courses had lots of water to surprise players with. During one course, if played right, an elephant made a noise and squirted water out of her trunk. Madison wsa right in the line of fire, of course, and shrieked with surprise. She loved it!
And later on, we met Mickey Mouse and Yensid, where there was a whole lot more water, this time pouring out of the buckets being carried by the magical brooms. The second to last hole was pretty much impossible for Madison right now, but all of the features and water made this her favorite mini-golf course ever.
Afterwards, we went over to Downtown Disney, but so did the rain front. God's favor has been amazing this week, simply amazing. It didn't even look like rain the whole time we were at the golf course. And it waited until we were done playing, and only then did it start.
And even then, as we watched the front come in, we were able to get on the boat that crosses the lake there, and stay under cover while the deluge started. It was a huge, heavy downpour, and we were all waiting in our boat, right there the middle of the lake. Imagine that opening scene from "Gilligan's Island" when the weather started getting rough, and that's pretty much what we were. Fortunately, our tiny ship wasn't being tossed. Also, fortunately, the rain's onslaught stopped right as we were getting off the boat: it was still raining a little bit, but nothing like what we experienced out there on the "high seas."
So we shopped around for a bit, waiting for the rain to die down a bit. We stopped at the candy store, and our usual haunts: the Christmas shop and the art gallery, where we swear each time to start setting up a canvas and paints as soon as we get home. This time, we mean it! Hopefully.
Anyway, our next stop was the purpose of our journey to Downtown Disney: Ghiardelli's, and the Strike-it-Rich ice cream special. Now that Mommy knows gluten is the source of all her troubles, she also knows that this particular ice cream is not going to give her trouble. SO, she ordered a whole one. We had favor again, and landed a perfect table outside, and the five of us enjoyed some mighty fine ice cream. Madison, of course, got the kid-sized ice cream, with monster-sized scoops and lots of sprinkles. Quite content, we watched the people go by, watched the lights and finished our ice creams.
And then it was time to go. We walked the distance from there all the way to where we usually park, over by Cirque du Soleil. Along the way, we stopped from time to time to listen to the many different bands that were performing outdoors. One Irish band had Madison clapping, along with many others in the crowd. There was quite a festive atmosphere there, this despite the rain. Eventually, we made it to the other side, making the long journey back to the car - Daddy carried Madison the entire distance.
We made it home late, and very tired - but quite content from another fun day.
