Magazines

How great to have a magazine subscription all to yourself.  These days, the internet rules the world in regards to information, imagery, movies and audio.   And yet, there's something special about getting a magazine in the mail, isn't there?  Daddy wants to get a subscription to something, as he's jealous that Madison has a few magazines in the mailbox after school.  Each day she gets off the bus, we check the mailbox, and yeah, there are usually bills, and these days lots of large full color graphics with candidates on them.  But occasionally, there's that magazine that has her name on the front, and she grabs that to run inside with.  Eating the snack that Mommy has already made up on the table, she flips through her new magazine - sometimes it is a LEGO magazine, or there was Sparkles for a season, or something specifically tied to Disney programming perhaps.  Today's magazine was from National Geographic, which is Nat Geo for short these days.  Madison is learning about orcas as she reads, and how is this anything but a win?

We had ballet and jazz tonight, the two biggies as far as time goes.  Hours of dancing, and the kids were rehearsing time and again for the upcoming performances.  We asked again if she was ready to hang up the ballet shoes, and Madison said it would be a lot less stressful.  Yes, those calendars are about to get full for all those ballerinas, and if that's the direction you want to go, then get ready to sacrifice more time in that direction.  But Madison is ready to try something else:  today we registered her officially for the upcoming martial arts camp, which starts very soon!

She's loved ballet, but it's interesting to see her turn that page, based on her own desires.  We had nothing to do with it, letting her know that either way we were good.  She said she was ready to retire, and as sentimental as we are about it as well, we know it's a big investment in time, and of course a whole lot more in money.

We're working on Summer Xtreme today, and Madison was checking out this pirate-themed video game that Daddy saw on sale.  It was an old, old, old game, one that Daddy used to play relentlessly "back in the day."  It was probably about the actual time of the Golden Age of Piracy.  Anyway, Madison set up her pirate for a bit, and was roaming the seas, checking things out.  She found Nassau right away.  Fortunately for them, she didn't choose to attack it.  No, she visited the taverns, saw the governor and danced at the ball afterwards.  It's one of Daddy's favorite games ever as a young lad, so we'll see how the update is as he tries it out later.  For now, it's good enough to have a fair bit of pirating going on.

Tomorrow is a big field trip, so we got to bed as early as we could today, reading some and of course praying some more.  It was a nice day today, although the weather is certain getting warmer.  Above average, they say.  But we were indoors for the most part in the afternoon, plugging away on all things Summer Xtreme related.  Daddy was working with mulch in the yard earlier, and in fact, check out this ant battle he captured in the front yard.  The aphids were under an assault, and it looked like a ferocious skirmish on this one stem:

Maybe there'll be something about that in the next Nat Geo magazine...
