It was a gloomy day, at least by Madison's observations. She used that word this evening on her way to ballet practice. Indeed, the weather was overcast to the point that the fog had set in in a way that reminded you of London, just prior to something creepy happening. I believe there was a dense fog warning announced, but that was fairly obvious looking outside.
Ballet was the first of the year, a busy hustle and bustle of everyone getting back to the routine of normalcy, which for us involves putting hair back and finding our ballet bag. Simultaneously, dozens of other parents were doing the very same thing as we prepared once more for a new season of dance. Madison learned a few things today, new steps that she showed Mommy and Daddy once we got home. Also, she got to see her spring recital costume, which she's excited about.
We didn't have as much time for anything else today, other than dinner and a bath. Madison's homework is online this week, which she typically finishes pretty quickly. While over by the computer, she noticed that Mommy had Daddy's boots unlaced, so the two of them worked together on my aglets and eyelets, two words you don't get to say everyday. Thanks to Phineas and Ferb, we all know what an aglet is. And eyelet is the thing you put your aglet through, like knitting, as Madison said. Mommy showed her how to properly lace a shoe, something Daddy ws figuring out too. No, it isn't that difficult.
Tonight before bed, we read some more from our Bible, about Abraham and his big move of faith. Madison's fast continues, and it isn't as tough as last year's. Daddy and Mommy are having a tough time though! I say that with a smile on our faces, because each year it is a challenge to reprogram your mindset to eat only vegetables and cut sugar out completely. But, we're managing just fine, and are better people for it. As we say each year, it is a church fast and not a private one. It is something we all do together, encouraging one another. Nobody sits around bragging about it, but we all go in together with the understanding that it is fasting and prayer that will bring us closer to God in 2015.
Another thing we did before bed was read a comic book. But this time, Daddy read one to Madison that was on this little iPad. It was an online comic book from the "Guardians of the Galaxy." She enjoyed it, although Daddy is a little unsure of this online comic book thing. But Daddy is leary of online books, and having an online iCloud collection of games, movies and music. Sure, you can get your copy of "Big Hero 6" a few weeks earlier, but you don't physically hold anything in your hands. It is all on an iCloud, a virtual storage place that you access from time to time to get your stuff. I think it is the miser in me that does not trust that to work out for me. I want a copy of a movie to hld. I want a CD with a jacket and artwork to look at. I want a comic book, along with that printer smell and the feeling of sliding that precious book out of the sleeve for the first time. I want to hold a weighty hard cover book with thick pages to turn.
Daddy got some of these books for Christmas. During ballet, I was reading a Terry Pratchett book, "Reaper Man" from a few years ago. It is a goal to get all the Discworld books on hard cover, but that might take some time. No problem, as I'm patient about that one. But I don't want any of his material on an e-book, or whatever you call it.
Madison's generation will probably not have books like we do. I'm not sure how I feel about that. Online books are a unique presentation, and certainly simpler. But holding a book just makes for a much more richer experience. The future may be less cluttered, as everyone's stuff is all on an iCloud. But I like a shelf of hard cover books too. It'll be interesting, for sure.
As for the comic, Madison enjoyed it. She knows the Guardians of the Galaxy well, having played the game frequently with Daddy. This was their year - Mommy and Daddy watched the movie again recently. And it was with thoughts not of princesses, but of Rocket, Groot, Star Lord, Gamora and Drax that our little girl went to sleep tonight, with a big smile on her face. She likes that Groot gives people hugs.
