May the Fourth Be With You

Daddy read much too late that today is Star Wars Day. Just before going home from work, he read it on his computer, and discovered the reason why this day was chosen. No, it isn't any sort of anniversary. The real reason is actually pretty funny: today is the one day each year where you can say to your neighbor: "May the Fourth Be With You."

From what I understand, it all started with a mistranslation by a German media outlet in 2005. In an interview, George Lucas said, "May the force be with you." The translator was apparently not a Star Wars fan, and had no idea what he was talking about, so he translated the phrase as "May the Fourth be with you." Someone thought it was very funny, and decided right there, that from that day on May 4th is Star Wars Day.

Because we found out so late, we didn't do as much as we would normally. Daddy plugged in some old Ewok cartoons for Madison in the playroom - and even the cartoon series "Droids," which features R2D2 and C3Po. Anyone who owns those is by definition a complete geek, so I stand convicted. I own more Star Wars movies and items than most people in this county, much of it dating back to my childhood - I never got rid of it! Daddy remembers standing on line for the original movies, and playing with all the action figures and vehicles all the time. We've got all the movies on DVD, and of course all the games. Star Wars is just one of those things that is lurking there in the background - but we haven't exposed a lot of it to Madison just yet. Not until today, at least! But even so, it was all pretty minor compared to what could be unleashed!

Meanwhile, Mommy got a great outfit together for her: she used some leftover children's Bible costumes from the Easter play! She grabbed the lightsaber one of our friends had given her for Madison's birthday, and presto! Instant jedi padawan!

Ba-Ba and Nana helped set up our photo up for today, and Daddy spent some time behind the computer making it work. That really is R2D2 standing next to Madison - we have an astromech of our own that likes to roll around in the garage.

Next year, we'll have bigger plans for Star Wars Day. One year, Mommy got me a Star Wars cook book, which features items like Wookie Cookies and Bossk Brownies.

Tonight, we've decided to sit down and watch for the first time the 1984 Star Wars flick, "Caravan of Courage." If you know what that movie is, you're really a geek!

So goodnight to all, and be sure to join us one year from today when things will no doubt be on a much grander scale. Until then, May the Fourth Be With You!
