This afternoon we tried out a new thing, some volcano eggs! Okay, so basically we were thinking of trying something different at Easter when it comes to dyeing our eggs. We saw this kit at a craft store, and thought we'd try it out. It comes with a few volcano stands, and also some volcanos for eggs on display. And the concept is that you cover the egg in this colorful powder, this after putting it in a bag and letting it get completely covered after rolling it around in the bag somewhat.
Then you add the vinegar, and the combination of powder and vinegar causes a fizzing up, like a volcano, and this sort of really interesting running effect along the side of the egg. We let Mom try it first, and then Maddie did too, as you can see here.
It was actually pretty cool. The colors were unique, and the process itself was kind of different and kind of fun. I brought out two plates - I called them "tectonic plates," of course. We erupted about eleven eggs and came out with all kinds of really cool designs.
This is the one that I did, which I loaded up with a super thick layer of green at the top, and when the flow of vinegar washed away a canyon on the surface, it showed the light green beneath, which seems to shimmer in this picture. Pretty cool!
Here's one that Mom did too. You can see the volcano stand, and the pool of dye there at the base waiting to cool into igneous rock there below!
And here is our plate, the traditional group shot of our creations that we take each year. Pretty colorful eggs! Usually, we try different designs and so forth, but this was just nice doing different things with the same method.
Close up of my egg here with that shimmering color beneath. It looks truly prehistoric!
This is one that Maddie did - this one looks like a celestial egg with all the stars and stardust on the surface.
Here's one that Mom did on a volcano egg stand, cooling off from such molten temperatures!
Another group shot above, and below you can see a group shot on the volcanic egg stands.
All in all, pretty cool! We squeezed this in today - it's a busy season, especially in the coming days. We were even squeezing in some much-needed yard work today too. We put some mulch out around the trees in the front yard, and picked a lot of those weeds that are out there. But this morning was KidPak, which you can see below.
