Lidenbrock Sea

We're beginning our "Verne Fest" tonight with a viewing of the classic version of "Journey to the Center of the Earth" from 1959.

One of the more fascinating ideas in this amazing story is the Lidenbrock Sea, named for the main character in the novel.  Our travelers to the Center of the Earth discover an underground ocean, which of course they have to travel to get to safety.  Somewhere in the middle of that ocean is the actual Center of the Earth, which would be a nice place to visit if it weren't for large jumping carnivorous fish, dimetrodons, rising temperatures, ginormous salamanders, whirlpools, and bad guys who want to eat your goose.

We thought a little bit of literature-inspired cinema would be fun to do with the start of the school year, and as we were talking about steampunk and seeing the Nautilus under the waves for a trip upcoming, why not go with Jules Verne?  It's amazing how many movies have been inspired by this guy.  We'll go to the Center of the Earth tomorrow night in a more up-to-date movie, the 3D one from a few years ago.  Madison will probably like that one better, as it is more current and a bit faster paced.  But this one was enjoyable too, certainly for Mommy and Daddy who remembered the dimetrodons, the spelunking, the jewels in the pool, and the strange musical notes that would play when the giant salamander showed up.

It was a fun story, and like I said, we'll go on another journey tomorrow night.  Perhaps later after that, we'll visit Mysterious Island.  We'll see how the time takes us, but the Verne Fest is officially on.

Today at school, Madison met the other teachers in her rotation, the ones for Social Studies, Science and Language Arts.  She's pretty happy with the teachers, although it would take quite a bit to make her not happy.  These seem like good people - we met them at the Open House the other night.  Already, she's off to a good start.  Madison's a good student, and we're looking forward to a wonderful year of education.  We've got some hints about what she'll be studying this year:  fractions, Civil War, life science, and so on.  The scheduled field trip looks to be bigger too.  We'll have fun this year, just as we have every year before.
