Curriculum and Hot Dog Night

Almost done!

This is the purple queen fish we've been working on.  The pink is the first coating, with a purple layer that goes over the upper portions - and a yellow stripe that follows the dorsal fin.  You can see the beginnings of the puppetry - the mouth is held shut with a rubber band.  When we attach fishing wire, we can pull the mouth open, and release to let the mouth shut.

The royal gamma fish is coming along a little quicker.  Josh has painted this one, and as you can see he is still at the warehouse.  That's where Mommy and Daddy went to day, carving and cleaning and gluing and of course painting as well.  The acrylic spray paint seems to be working better, but you really have to give it up for Josh:  he's the one that designed these.  Daddy carved the royal gamma you see above, but based it on Josh's drawings.  Later next week, you'll see the unicorn fish that Daddy came up with.  That's really an unusual fish.  We saw a few in Gatlinburg at a trip to the aquarium there some times ago.

Daddy thought it'd be fun and unusual to have a unicorn fish in this series, so we've sculpted that one out for a character introduction next weekend.  This weekend is rapidly approaching though, which is why we came to the warehouse on our days off to get busy.

It was a perfectly pleasant day, and there's been a slight lifting of our spirits despite the overwhelming heaviness of the earlier portion of the week.  Madison came home today in good spirits, which is always something that picks you up.

We had to move quickly though:  Daddy wanted to do two things after Madison ate an afternoon snack.  First, we snuck over to the library, where we picked up the third installment of the Never Girls series.  We definitely wanted to start reading that at night time, which of course we did tonight before bed.  Madison really enjoys hearing these books before bed.  Interesting news on the horizon is that there may be a series just like it being released in January, but with a theme from the movie "Frozen."  That may be a 'must-buy' for Madison.

The other thing we did today took up a significantly longer amount of time:  it was Curriculum Night at the school.  This was just a basic overview of the school year for Madison.  First stop was the cafeteria though!  It's there that we had hot dogs and potato chips, and of course a gallon of ketchup.  Madison found her friends right away, and they all sat together laughing and telling stories.

From there we went to a classroom where all the second grade teachers informed us of curriculum throughout the year.  One focus is the state of Georgia, which might be a fun thing to explore this year. Another topic was civics and leadership, which also could be interesting.  Math skills will increase this year of course, as will reading and writing.  Common Core was mentioned again, which based on a recent election may be question mark for the future.  We're not entirely against having a uniform sort of education that is universal, but there are quite a few complaints that Common Core is not exactly the best format.  All of this is putting it really delicately, as it is a hot button issue.  Hopefully one we won't be talking about much longer, as Daddy is not looking forward to 38 new ways of learning how to add 2 + 2.

We learned a bit about the apps needed for classroom, and did some general introductions as well.  Afterwards, we went over to the science room, where Madison will be learning a bit about life science and about physics as well.  Next, Madison showed Daddy the art room, where Madison will be spending a bit more time being creative.  And then there was the music room, where Madison showed Daddy her exact seat this year, and last year.  I'm not entirely sure if the teacher knows that Madison can do the piano a bit, but that might make for an interesting surprise some day.  Finally, we made our way to the resource room, where we picked up some board games for the future, ones that include a bit of education.  One features players shopping at a mall, so there'll be some money exchanged and of course some shopping too - Madison should like that.

Tonight we got back late from school, and it was pretty much time for bed.  Early nights as we have to get up early for school in the morning - but that's what we did.  Daddy read her from the new Never Girls book, we said our prayers for peace and joy, something the world is so desperately needing this week.  And a good night's rest too.
