Referral Day - Six Years Ago

It was six years ago today that we were waiting anxiously for our happily ever after - and her picture and information did eventually come:  today was the anniversary of our referral date.  It's the date we first saw Madison's face.  Daddy remembers distinctly getting absolutely nothing done at the office that day.  It was - and still is - a big deal!

Again we relived the day, telling the story to Madison once again.  We remembered first thing in the morning, how six years ago we saw about three pictures of this tiny little girl seated or standing up against this backdrop with this putting green carpet beneath her.  For some reason, she was very heavily bundled up, which initially led us to think that she was from a more northward part of China.  This was not to be, of course, as she was about as south in China as she could get, closer to Vietnam.

Here are the first three pictures we received, all together on one file, just as we downloaded them for the first time:

This was the attachment we sent to everyone, the first picture of our daughter that most of us would see.  Later that day - it was Ye-Ye's birthday - we left a printed version of this on his windshield.  He was inside the local movie theater watching a movie, and we couldn't wait to share the image with him of his new granddaughter - so we put this picture above on his windshield.

Here we are on May 2 once more, and yes, it is Ye-Ye's birthday.  We celebrated by going out as a family to Texas Roadhouse.  We didn't have anyone scream or yell or carry on while we were there though.  This was much appreciated by Ye-Ye, who enjoyed having everyone there for his birthday.  It was nice to have the entire family there together.  We had learned earlier that Madison's cousin David got all the money he needs to go on his missions trip, so that was good news.

We ate, exchanged gifts, and spent time talking about this, that or the other.  Next Saturday, we'll do it all again as we celebrate Mother's Day.  Mommy's birthday is coming up on May 8th, so we went ahead and gave Mommy a few gifts too - she wanted some gift cards to Lowe's, so that we could get to planting flowers and vegetables in our yard.  We'll head out there soon, collecting a bunch of things to plant.

We got home later, quite full, and quite content with the day.  Madison and Daddy played some games and played some piano, followed by some more reading of that one comic - and the Bible, of course.  We talked about wisdom, and who to ask for it - and how important it is to have.  Yes, we're in the book of Proverbs for a short time.  It's a kid version, so it'll be quicker and easy. But it's a good introduction.

So that's how our day went, six years later.  Six years later, things are routine - Madison of course has no memory life in China.  But six years ago, that's where she was, waiting in her orphanage.  What intense moments they were, waiting for our daughter.  We waited so long - and now here we are looking back on it so long ago.  One thing is clear:  it really was our happily ever after!
