We only had a brief window before tennis, but Daddy had come home from work to see Mommy and Madison. Mommy had cooked up a nice dinner for Daddy, but right after that, we wanted to do something a little different: tonight was Rosh Hashanah, and we thought it would be fun to try some apples dipped in honey. Madison has not tried this before, but once she dipped the apples in the honey, she got pretty excited. She said, "It's yummy!"
We also blew the shofar today. Nana and Ye-Ye gave us one some time ago, and as it is the Feast of Trumpets, we had a little fun with that. Madison has used the shofar before - a couple years ago.
Madison and Mommy went promptly to tennis practice after that - and Daddy went back to church to set up things for the big night.
Tennis practice was great! Mommy took Madison there this afternoon for her first session, and Madison enjoyed it quite a bit. She played a little game called "Popcorn," which is somewhat like musical chairs with tennis balls. She wound up almost winning, which is quite a feat for a girl of her stature (against the boys!). She also spent time swinging the racket a bit, and chasing balls with the other kids when it wasn't her turn. When asked if she wanted to go back, she said with much enthusiasm: "Yes!"
So now we have three classes in the week after school, pretty much filling up the schedule. This makes for a pretty busy calendar, but it is all pretty balanced. Firstly, music class is a huge thing to us: she's not just learning to play the keyboard. She's learning rhythm, the scales, different instruments, composers, and more. Ballet has been very good too. Mommy has always been into ballet, and in a way is living through Madison, watching her dressed so lovely and going off to learn the different dance positions. She's learning the mechanics, and learning a little grace as well. With this last class - tennis - we're seeing her doing something a bit more athletic. She's enjoyed hitting the ball back at Daddy on the courts at home, and this will improve her skills, and get her moving a little too.
Gymnastics has always been a thought, and she does seem to enjoy it a bit. But we haven't had much success with any of the nearby places yet. This may be something for the future, although we don't want to overbook her with activities. Another thing that Daddy is looking to get her involved in would be karate. Yes, I know it's Japanese and not Chinese, but the importance of it are the aspects of self-discipline, honor, and of course self-defense. In this world we live in, that last little bit wouldn't hurt to know. So you may see her signed up for a few camps here and there in the future, although I'm not sure if she'll be there for the long haul - that is, getting a series of colored belts. That's completely up to her though: if she likes anything enough, and is willing to commit the time for it, we're open to it. Another class we were eyeing had to do with the arts, a creative course that expands her creative skills a bit. These were over at the Quinlan, where we sent her to camp earlier this summer. She did enjoy those quite a bit.
Anyway, that's the future possibilities - which I suppose is what we talk about with a new year approaching. It should be a very interesting year, to say the least. We're still keeping an eye on the Middle East, quite wary of any military strikes. Yet there seems to be a temporary hold on making any move - in the meantime we still pray for peace. And along those lines, we wish you a peaceful year as well, as sweet as honey on apples.
Shanah Tovah!
