Every morning, it's not exactly a competition, but it's a declaration from Madison: "I'm the first down the stairs, you're the second, and Daddy is third." Sometimes Daddy will sneak down early and surprise Madison, but then she'll announce the results: "Daddy is first down the stairs, then Madison, and then Mommy!"
Of course, when Daddy gets down the stairs, he hears Madison storm through the kitchen to her hiding place near the laundry room. Daddy does the customary, "Where could Madison be? I thought she was awake already and downstairs?"
At which point she jumps out and scares us with a "BOO!"
Today was back to school after a particularly long weekend, which most new series weekends are. When Madison got home, we did something we haven't done in a few weeks: we went to the library. There, Madison got a few books for herself, about five or six. I have a feeling she would have gotten a lot more if Daddy hadn't redirected her to the computers over against the wall. It's what we used to call a "media center" or a "computer lab," which sounds all futuristic - if you were in the 80's. Nowadays, I guess it's just called a "wall with a bunch of computers against it."
Anyway, we had a good time at the library. When we got home, it was time to do some serious catching up with piano practice. Madison can play by herself "Twinkle Little Star," with both hands, and she can also play "Packy's Parade" with both hands. Both of these involve playing chords for the harmony as you play the melody - which is tricky stuff for even Daddy. In fact, it's safe to say that in some respects, Madison is now picking up on chords quicker than Daddy. As a reward for her playing "Packy's Parade" without any mistakes, Daddy got her something: "Lego Batman 2." This was a game Daddy promised her if she could play the whole thing. The promise was made a little over a month ago, when it seemed pretty difficult to play. Now, she plays it much better.
As for "Lego Batman 2," we'll have to play that when we get a power cord for our new X-box. How's this for a blessing: we got a free new X-box Slim last week. Within a month of our previous X-box passing away, our friend Taylor came by and said he'd give us his because he doesn't really use it anymore. The only thing it needs, he said, was a power cord. We'll hopefully get one of those this week, and when we do, there will be much rejoicing. What a blessing! The value of this thing was a few hundred dollars, so we're pretty tickled at getting one for free!
Another blessing was dinner: chicken marsala! Mommy made some of this for she and Daddy, although Madison was quite pleased with her cherry tomatoes, ham slices, and tater tots. Just so long as she had ketchup.
We were getting close to bedtime, so we decided to finish our "Lion King" movie marathon with "The Lion King 2" tonight. It has it's moments, but it wasn't quite the level of the previous one, and a significant step down from the first one. Still, it was neat to watch another movie from Africa. Later on this month, we'll check out "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa," and maybe even that old movie, "The Wild." In fact, Daddy got a few DVDs from the library today with an African theme. We'll sort have that mixed in with a bit of St. Patrick's Day.
Speaking of which, after Madison went to bed, we watched an old movie, "Top O' the Morning," with Bing Crosby. It was the first part of our latest holiday movie theme list! The movie was okay, one we're happy to have watched, although not one we'd add to our collection anytime soon. As we close out this day, here's a list of St. Patrick's Day things to watch on the television. We haven't seen a few of these yet, but this year we're hoping to catch a lot of them!
1. "Top O' the Morning" Bing Crosby singing Irish songs in Ireland with Irish people looking for a stolen Blarney Stone.
2. "Darby O'Gill and the Little People" This is the ultimate St. Patrick's Day movie!
3. "Luck of the Irish" We'll be checking this one out this month. It's an old Disney Channel movie about a student who just might be turning into a leprechaun.
4. "The Quiet Man" Can you believe we've never seen this one? We've heard a lot of good things about it, so this may be the year we see it.
5. "St. Patrick's Day" This is a Veggie Tales cartoon short, which is a lot of fun!
6. "Chip and Dale Rescue Rangers: The Last Leprechaun" This is one on the list to watch this month with Madison. We heard it was a good episode!
7. "Leap Year" This is a romantic comedy that takes place in Ireland. We haven't seen it yet, but it's on the "to do" list this year.
8. "The Leprechaun's Christmas Gold" This is less a Christmas special than a St. Patrick's Day one. It is a Rank and Bass special - dated, but still fun to watch with Madison.
9. "The Fugitive" So there's an Irish parade scene in this incredible movie. Does that make it a St. Patrick's Day movie? Why not!
10. "The Secret of Roan Inish" Always wanted to see this one. Maybe this year...
Hopefully this will be a good reference point for St. Patrick's Day movies. Irish everyone a good night!
