It is 9-11 once more, and now we're thirteen years away, again wondering how exactly it is that much time slips away from us so easily. Madison and many others her age don't have much of an idea about what Patriot Day is all about, as we've generally been shielding her from the intense, raw hurt of that events of that awful morning.
Madison's prayer was a special one this morning, for a shield over folks to keep them from danger, especially those who live in Hawaii near the volcano who probably need a lava-proof shield. Of all the dangers in the world, it is funny when we think back to childhood, and there it is: lava. That is why we jump around on furniture in the houses, not touching the floor with our feet. It is lava. And that is why just about every Miyamato game has a lava level on it. Lava is an easier danger to recognize than terrorists. I mean, lava just sits there, all hot and doing what it was designed to do. Terrorists, however, do not do what they are supposed to do. What they do makes no sense to anyone but themselves, which is why it is a tougher concept to explain to younger kids. There are bad people out there, and although God loves everyone, there are some folks that just seem determined to go their own way and watch the world burn. We prayed for those people this morning. And we prayed that everyone would be safe from lava as well.
It is Thursday, which has a new texture this season than last. There is no ballet on Thursday - only spare time to do piano and homework and such. Madison's classwork has been stellar so far. Her speech skills have been the only thing lacking lately. It is with this in mind that we had yet another appointment with her speech teachers during class time. Everyone agreed that there has been a slight regression over the summer, something that is common in general for any educational growth. But we are feelign twinges of impatience now, not feeling as if there has been enough improvement over the past year. We didn't necessarily express this at the meeting, but we are of like mind, Mommy and Daddy. Even Madison is somewhat frustrated from time to time. She wonders why she has to repeat things so much, and doesn't quite know what she sounds like. She is meeting three times a week, for about ten minutes per meeting. They seem to think that is enough. But we're not satisfied with that at the moment. For this reason, we're considering additional speech therapy. Perhaps this local school's therapy is too overwhelmed? Too many numbers? We're not sure, but we do feel like there was more attention given to Madison at the Challenged Child school a few years ago. It was there that we were seeing some real progress. Of course, it is all difficult to measure, one year building upon another. But she is eight years old, and we're wanting things to go faster. As parents, who wouldn't? And so the search for a speech therapist begins. We know this can be pricy, but we want her to have more ease in her communication.
Daddy went to work today. The reason for the extra day of work is that he plans on going on a day trip with the family on Saturday. Hopefully that will all work out, but it will nice to spend time with Madison and Mommy all day long. Daddy did get home in time to be with everyone today, doing homework and piano. We even watched some Spongebob, which is the most patriotic thing you can do, right?
At night we read from our Never Girls book, and of course said our prayers. God kept our nation safe today, and as further proof of the power of prayer, nobody was attacked - anywhere - by lava.
