So we were sitting down on the couch tonight to enjoy a movie - more on that in a moment - when Madison was shifting with the blankets and so forth, and suddenly started complaining about this red mark on her leg. I thought she initially said it happened in the morning that she got hurt, but she then said it just happened. It was a big red mark, like a puncture spot. And the more I looked at it, the more I realized there was fluid building around it - she'd been bitten by something.
That's when Daddy starts to panic a tiny bit - he gets Madison up off the couch and over to the kitchen table, where there's light for Mommy to look. Sure enough, it's a sting. The question is, what kind of sting was it?
Daddy picked up all the blankets carefully, the pillows and the stuffed animals too. He had a flashlight to the couch, while Mommy was putting ice on the wound. Madison was a little upset, but not crying in the slightest. Daddy shown the flashlight under the couch, and all over the floor. What was it? The mind starts filling in the blanks - was it a scorpion or a spider? Surely it wasn't a wasp, as it would have flown off by now, certainly with Daddy flopping the pillows and blankets about.
And yet right there in the crevice of two cushions, there it was. Daddy had been searching for a bit by now, and almost lost hope in identifying the culprit. This would have been bad, because we wouldn't have been certain how to treat Madison, and we wouldn't have been certain if we were to be bitten again. But there it was, crawling out and causing us to jump a bit as we were a bit too close: a wasp.
Daddy had the light on it, as Madison backed up a bit, and Mommy got a big flyswatter. Sorry, wasp.
This was good news, as we were able to treat Madison with a neat little home remedy that helped neutralize the venom a bit: meat tenderizer! The swelling went down very quickly, as did the pain. During the whole episode, Madison was very strong. Daddy was an absolute wimp when he was her age, crying at every bite as if it were my right and license. Yellow jacket sting? Time for a crying fit! But with Madison, she handled it like a grown-up, something Daddy probably couldn't do even now!
Soon we were back to normal, watching our movie. It was "Night at the Museum" again, this time on Blu-Ray, recently purchased so that we could get some ideas for our upcoming series at KidPak. Daddy did get some ideas, although the features on the new Blu-Ray are extremely sparse. As in, there aren't any. We're glad we didn't get rid of the DVD, because it had a whole lot of extra featurettes - and better packaging too, while we're at it.
Anyway, Madison was really into the movie again. She remembered some of the key plot points from last viewing, and even some of the things that Mommy or Daddy didn't remember at all.
Earlier today, it was Day Two of her Art Camp experience at the Quinlan Art Center. Daddy and Madison got there pretty early, and were second in line to get in the building. The end result was a little bit of a wait, but that was all right by us. We told stories as we always do, this time about superheroes playing volleyball and going bowling. Initially, the superheroes were raiding a castle to rescue Iron Man. But after a time of fighting, the villains and superheroes decided it was probably best to put all that fighting on hold and settle their differences with volleyball and bowling. For the record, the superheroes won at volleyball, but the villains ruled the day at the bowling alley. Also of note, Madison is a superhero. She came up with her own superpowers: of course she can fly. But her other power is interesting - she made this up, I think. She throws these "sleep bombs." They explode, and rather than cause a radius of damage, they cause everyone in a particular radius to go to sleep. That's not a bad superpower. In fact, I think I've been hit by that right now.... getting sleepy...
