Marine Science Center Summer Camp - Day 2

Here's Madison, ready to start her second day at the Marine Science Center Summer Camp, which turned out to be another fantastic sort of day.  She started out doing worksheets about manatees and fishing as well, and as soon as everyone was able to get going, she and the others got going to a place called Mosquito Lagoon.  Okay, what a terribly ominous name!  It must be located nearby Leach Bay, which is across from Sea Lice Inlet, where Water Moccasin Creek runs down a bit from Piranha Swarm Lake.

Regardless of the name, the kids all showed up ready to row, row, row their boats.  After listening to a lesson on how to row, the kids all lined up, and walked down the boardwalk towards the open water.

They were ready to go!  Madison of course did this last year, so she was all ready to go out in the boats to go on an epic journey.

Yes, you can see Madison here with her cohorts rowing up the River Anduin towards the outpost Amon Hen.  Perhaps there they'll see some manatees?

She had fun with her rowing today, actually having fun pretty much in all she did.  She even learned a lot of new things today, even though she's done a lot of this before.  The rowing is something she's gotten better at - the girls actually beat the boys in a race this afternoon.

But that's not purpose of today's adventure in the canoes.  They were out to find some manatees, and so they rowed with purpose to their destination, a location where they knew there'd be some.

You can see a few close to the surface of the water here.  Madison and the others found the manatees, but kept their distance, saying hi from a distance.  And then it was time for lunch, and time for a trip to Canaveral National Seashore.

They had fun attacking the waves - or visa versa.  It was fun going out there, laughing, jumping, and getting soaked by stray waves.  The kids screamed and laughed in the water there, having the seashore there all to themselves.

This was also part of a seashell collecting mission, but things took an odd turn with the discovery of sea butterflies.  "Sea butterflies" sounds like some flittering, floating sort of harmless little thing, doesn't it?

It's not. These have sharp shells, basically evil sea needles that like to imbed themselves into clothing, bathing suits, and skin.  Yikes!

The kids left the beach not long after this, and that was okay because they were on their way anyway. They all returned to the Marine Science Center, where there was still more to learn.

Madison was learning about - and touching - urchins here, along with other sea creatures and crustaceans.  It was a pretty full day, right?

We weren't done though.  Madison got home and it was still Taco Tuesday, so Nana and Ba-Ba had tacos ready for dinner.  And after that, we went to Cow Licks again for ice cream!  That place is always really busy, a good sign for a small business like that.  Word of mouth is a good thing, as is good ice cream, of course!

Getting home after that, it was finally time to start turning in.  Madison got a bath, and we were soon reading from "The Vile Village" and the latest devotional entry.  We've got another great day tomorrow, but today was tough to beat - it was a pretty awesome Tuesday!
