Strongman

Tonight's message was about the strongman at the circus, which had a fun little Biblical twist to it:

Ladies and gentlemen, prepare to be amazed at feats of strength unlike anything you’ve ever seen. Stepping into the spotlight is one hulk of a man, bulging muscles, and carrying immense weights as if they were children’s toys!
We’re all amazed at the power and skill of the strongman, and no doubt questioning if those weights are really that heavy. Trust us: they are! These guys are simply the strongest in the world. Where does this power come from?
They all get their gift from God. Whether we recognize it or not, God is our source of strength that can help us through any situation. In our Bibles, even Paul knew this when he said, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”
Nobody knows exactly who the very first strongman was, but the most famous one of all is a man whose very name is synonymous with strength and power: That name is Samson. His feats of might were legendary!
Sadly, he was a complete dumbbell. Seriously, he took for granted his gift of strength, and never worried about the consequences of a life of sin until it was too late. When he stepped into the ring each time, he was the big show, thinking it was all about himself. Too bad he was about to discover some things the hard way.
We can save ourselves his trouble if we remember to honor God with our lives, and stay away from those things that weaken us. Then we’ll stay strong and healthy, a powerhouse for God.
In the end, Samson repented and prayed for his gift of strength to return. And despite being blind and bound, he still managed to bring the house down! You see, no matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been, God can restore you with power from on high. Simply cast your cares on Him, and team up with Him to become the ultimate show of strength!

We had fun with this theme tonight at the service, at one point getting volunteers to attempt the impossible:  lift a chair.  If you haven't seen this before, the idea is to have your feet flat on the ground, your heels against a wall, your legs straight, and your bottom against the wall.  Then, simply bend over and pick up a chair with both hands at the bottom.

It's impossible - though it's nothing to do with strength or muscles.  It has everything to do with our center of balance, which is way off in that position.  Still, it was fun watching people attempt it.

Madison was doing quite a bit of homework today, writing her own sentences (with help from Mommy and Daddy of course).  The yak is big and smelly.  We're still with the letter "y," which we're writing over and over again - but we're also doing math problems.  And piano.  There's a lot of homework to do lately!

Today was a work day for the most part, although it was great to go home and pick up Madison from school.  We spent some time together, still with Nana and Ba-Ba, who have been touring the medical community this past week.  They like the doctors up here, so they schedule their annual check-ups in Georgia, and make the trip a few times a year.  It's nice having them, plus they get some "business" out of the way.  This time around, it's been a little more difficult on Nana, as far as procedures go, but the good news is that there isn't anything too drastic going on in her life.  They're amazingly fit people!

Not quite "strongman" though...
