Madison called Nana this morning - it's her birthday today. We called before school at 6:45 am or so, which was okay because they were just getting up. Nana does that to Daddy all the time on his birthday, calling first thing in the morning each year. It's like our Uncle George used to do on New Year's Eve, calling to wish us a Happy New Year from California, which is three time zones away, where it is really 3:00 am in the Eastern Time Zone.
Anyway, we spent some time talking - the party isn't today, but we'll be getting together for Labor Day, we believe. That'll be nice - the whole family will once again be getting together for that one.
We finished up the first Jack Sparrow book with Madison, who loves story time at night. The villain chasing them was one Captain Torrents, who is an interesting character with some supernatural powers. No, he doesn't magically illegally download files online. Although that is an altogether different sort of piracy. His type of torrents are the ones that fall from the skies - he's perpetually at the eye of a storm, and it's usually a really bad one if he's mad. Apparently he's angry a lot.
And that's in essence what's happened here in the North Georgia region of late. We've had the most unusual sort of rain, as heavy as any you could ever see - solid walls of water streaking across the horizon like one of those car wash cycles. It's like Georgia is the car, and apparently there's a lot of cleaning up to do.
So today was Friday. This means we have nothing scheduled after school. This is a novelty, as next week we'll see stuff going on Monday through Thursday after school, with Friday being our chance to take a breather.
Can you believe we've already been Christmas shopping? True story. Mommy was looking online for a few items, and we found some deals, and suddenly we're making lists and so forth. We're not listening to Christmas songs yet though!
Mommy is longing for fall a little though. If anything, just to put out the fall decorations. It seems so weird not putting them out as school begins. But summer is still here, as evidenced by our sporadic weather. So it's this weird month, August. It used to be that August was the end of summer, with Labor Day a sort of nail in the coffin. August was a sacred month, a time where we all had a chance to make peace with the seven phases of the death of our summer. But now that time is supposed to come in July, where we're just really getting happy about the reality of summer. Growing up, we had all our big vacations in August. I don't know why - perhaps it was because there are no holidays there, and it helped make a boring month more bearable. Of course, Nana's birthday is in August. But that's about it, other than obscure holidays and so forth.
This weekend should be nice. We may not be going on any vacations for a while, but Madison enjoyed her summer very much, as short as it was. And on that note, it's time to close this blog entry for now: thunder is rumbling once again outside. I guess Captain Torrents is on his way back by again.
