"Enjoy it While You Can"

The Westing Game is getting close to a wrap up here, and we're starting to put the pieces of the puzzle together.  I think within the next two nights, we'll have it all figured out.  But right now there are some mighty strong suspicions in the house!  The thing is, Madison has read it already and knows what happens next.  She's watching our reactions as we read, and enjoying the book once again.  This was a good Christmas present, a nice little mystery!

Today the weather warmed up, and I think it got to sixty degrees, which is downright balmy for us lately.  "Enjoy that while you can," the weather people are saying, as another cold front is on the way.  Meanwhile, Madison has a slight cough.  Daddy slept very little last night, a battle with insomnia that hasn't happened in quite some time.  Mommy is doing okay, and that's good.

Madison returned to school today, her first day in 2018 at the school.  It was mostly a review day, as there was a pretty big gap between the last day and this.  Also, there are but 90 days of school left, which is crazy when you think about it.  90 days left of Chestatee Elementary.

We continued practice for "Frozen" tonight, with Madison learning more of her fast-paced "In Summer" routine.  Meanwhile, Mommy and Daddy were shopping for vegetables and creative fast-friendly options.  One thing we'll be making - hopefully - is a version of the ratatouille as seen in the movie of the same name.  We got the ingredients tonight, and we've got the mandolin, so I think everything is all set!  Also on the grocery list:  cold and flu medication.  We're armed and ready.  We're setting things up for Madison tonight, as she's just got that little cough and inflammation.

Practice went a little later tonight, and it gobbled up piano time - that was a conflict.  It's the only conflict with piano for a while, so we should be good this next week.  Right now, there's a choreographer in town, and just about every day this week Madison will be at ballet, practicing for the production.  That means tomorrow night and Thursday night too.  Last night was cancelled because of the inclement weather that didn't really happen.

Regardless, Madison said she'll be really tired of that song soon:  "In Summer."  We left her at ballet with the other girls, some of them quietly reading books they brought.  Madison's book was another one she got for Christmas, a book from "The Babysitter's Club."  She loves that series.  Christmas was a great time for getting books.

Tonight, Daddy will be reading one of his books as we drift off to sleep.  Mommy too.  One great thing about this time of year is sitting under the blankets, reading books.  And as we go off to read, you too can read this fasting devotional entry here, the next one in the book we read tonight:

“By the canal that flows toward Ahava, I announced a fast. I told the people not to eat any food. In that way, we made ourselves humble in God’s sight. We prayed that He would give us and our children a safe journey. We asked Him to keep safe everything we owned.” Ezra 8:21 NIRV

Before heading up the mountain, climbers have an important decision to make. Which is the best way to go? Where do you start, and what path do you follow? Such a decision is really important! It could mean facing a more difficult journey, or it could mean facing more dangers. Or, if you spend enough time preparing, it could mean a smooth trip upwards.
Some time ago, Ezra knew he had a similar decision to make. What path would the Israelites take, and could they make it all the way? Seriously, could they possibly avoid all those dangers along the journey?
Unlike climbers today, he didn’t look to a map of the mountain. Instead, he looked to God. Our Bible tells us that Ezra announced a fast for all of his people. It was a church fast, and together they would pray for a journey free of dangers. They prayed for safety for themselves, for their children, and all their possessions. Together, they joined in prayer and fasting with one common thought: that God would keep them safe.
It’s a good reason to fast and pray. As the year begins, we’re all facing a lot of unknowns in the coming months. But we can start our adventure on the right foot! Just as Ezra did, begin the upcoming journey with fasting and prayer. Reaching the end of the year safely is a good goal, isn’t it? Although that may seem a long way off, you can and will make it okay with God’s help and guidance. Seek His assistance with fasting and prayer. You can make it up the mountain together!
