Academics and Epidemics

We set up a lot for tonight's ballet production, but in the end we just couldn't do it:  Madison was sick.  Not only is she currently sniffling, coughing and sneezing - so is Mommy.  Both are currently medicated, and riding this one out.  Their symptoms, while bad, could be worse:  there's a huge upswing in flu cases throughout this nation.  I'm not sure if it is an epidemic or pandemic, but it's academic that tonight we're staying home.  No sense jumping around in tights when your body is fighting something.  In fact, we may take tomorrow off of school.

The flu is not at epidemic levels yet, but according to the CDC, they are approaching that dangerous territory, "if trends continue."  This would be early in the season as well, so as you can imagine, there is a lot of hand-washing and heavy prayers.  Flu?  No thank you!

It was a good day at school for Madison, despite this.  She's got vocabulary tests coming up soon though, and needs to do some studying.  We might do that tomorrow.  One thing we did do tonight was read the Westing Game.  We're finished with this book now, and quite happy with the ending.  It's a more complex book than can be summarized here, other than to say it's a mystery that unfolds over many chapters, following quite a few eccentric sorts of characters.  The end is somewhat of a surprise, even to seasoned mystery fans.  This might be because of so many false clues that set your mind thinking in one direction or another.  Madison kept quiet the entire time, not telling us a thing about the end result:  she wouldn't spoil it!

Tonight at KidPak, Daddy had a great night with some science experiments, while the other classes did their things as well.  We all have these different unique approaches to the same bottom line, and it's just amazing to see all the creativity poured into these kids' lives each Wednesday night.  This is how we started it all some time ago, with a bottom line and a whole lot of creativity in each classroom.

We have amazing volunteers!  It was a solid night through and through, but Daddy was anxious to get home and check on his girls.  Both were pretty much asleep, having gone to bed early to get a good night's rest.  Before leaving for church tonight, we prayed again, and we also read from our fasting devotional.  Which is what you'll see here as we leave for the day:

“She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying.” Luke 2:37 NIV

Climbers going up Mt. Everest are recommended to stay at the Everest Base Camp a few days first. You see, before you can go really high up to the tops of these mountains, you have to spend some time at a higher elevation, getting used to the atmosphere.
In our Bibles, there was a woman named Anna that spent a lot of time getting acclimated. The Bible says she spent all her time at the temple, worshipping night and day. She prayed, and she fasted too. She spent all her time at a higher level, getting prepared for something even greater.
As you pray and fast, you’re doing the same. When we fast and pray, we’re preparing for something greater. We’re acclimating, getting our bodies and spirits ready to ascend to new heights.
Anna was one of the first people to see Jesus in the flesh. It was no doubt a high point in her life. Are you ready for a high point in your life? As you fast and pray, you’re acclimating. You’re getting ready to elevate to a new level with Him.
