Array

What is an array?

This was one of Madison's math questions tonight, and although we could look it up, we thought it best to ask her teacher.  The response came quickly via email:

An array is a mathematical representation using rows and columns

At which point, we might have gotten the question back from Madison:

What is a representation

Fortunately, we were able to work this one out easily, and the day was saved.  One great thing is how fast her teacher responded.  She's been good with communication thus far.

We did sort of know what an array was, but we are sort of scared to put our thoughts in when it comes to this new-fangled way of doing things.  It appears as if we'll be both learning things along the way, at least when it comes to math.  With other subjects, surely things won't be this drastically different with teaching approaches.  Right?  Right?

Anyway, today was an oddball day.  Mommy wasn't doing well for starters.  She had a bad reaction to something, pretty much her first really bad day since the surgery.  So, we didn't sleep all that well last night.  But still, Daddy had to do quite a bit of work for this upcoming weekend's events at the church.  There's a conference for women going on, and part of that means a marshmallow roast.  Daddy bought an array of marshmallows - literally 2,200 marshmallows this afternoon.  Hopefully there isn't some poor soul needing just one bag of marshmallows hitting Wal-Mart and Target anytime soon.  They'll be trying to figure out what's going on?  How come nobody sells marshmallows anymore?  Reason:  Daddy bought them all.

It was a beautiful day today.  We did piano as we always do.  Madison is learning new keys, and working on memorizing those bass notes as well.  Lazy dogs must sleep and smart turtles rarely fight lions.  If you recognize those phrases, then you may be memorizing the bass notes the way we are.

At piano, Madison did her homework enough to earn a visit to the prize box.  Or toy chest.  Whatever you call it, this is a magical place.  Kids sit there for what seems like forever, sifting through heaps of happy meal toys looking for just that perfect thing to take home with them.  Four kids earned the right to visit the box this week, and it was just like Christmas.  Madison and the others were just so delighted to look through so many options, as parents patiently waited for them to make the oh-so difficult decision.  Seriously, it gets to the point where parents have to give the little helpful nudge:  "Okay, we got to get moving now?"

And so Madison brought home some slime.  Yes, that's right:  slime.  It's in a container, for now.  Hopefully it won't escape in the night, oozing its way through the neighborhood.  Daddy still has terrible memories of watching the Blob ooze through the air vents at a movie theater in a movie he shouldn't have been watching as a child.  Currently, the slime is trapped in a plastic case on the kitchen table.  I think it is staring at me as I type this.

Daddy did drop by the Disney Store to get the latest lithographs from the new movie "Inside Out."  It seems you have to pre-purchase these movies pretty early or you won't get the lithographs.  Which of course is the only reason to buy them at the Disney Store, unless you just want to pay five dollars more for no good reason.  Anyway, add another four lithographs to the collection - a "Cinderella" one is on the way in the mail too.  We've got an array of lithographs at home, if you want to get technical.

While waiting for Madison today, Daddy has been reading one of the final Disc World books, "Raising Steam."  This has been such a great book, a good-bye of sorts to some of Daddy's favorite literary characters.  An array of characters, if you want to call it that.  Seriously, Havelock Vetenari is one of Daddy's favorite characters in literature.  Hopefully that doesn't say too much about my personality.

Tonight, we finished "City of Gold," the latest Jack Sparrow book in our series.  The end has an appearance by none other than Davy Jones.  This is not the guy from the Monkees.  Daddy read his voice as best as he could-AH with bit of menace-AH!  Madison is looking forward to the next book, of course.  We have it resting up there right now - it has Davy Jones' face on it, with an array of tentacles-AH!
