Groundhog Day

Happy Groundhog Day! Here Madison is with Phil, her groundhog from the Build-a-Bear Workshop, which we picked up in 2008. It's a limited edition doll, even wearing a Groundhog Day t-shirt that proudly proclaims that spring is on the way (the reverse side tells of a more gloomy forecast). Mommy put the shirt on correctly this morning, because our Phil didn't see his shadow. Not seeing a shadow means one thing: spring is around the corner!

Up in Punxsatawney, Pennsylvania, their groundhog did see his shadow - so unfortunately they've got six more weeks of winter to deal with. But down here we're okay, thanks to the groundhog's clear and accurate weather prognostication. Groundhogs have a posted 94% accuracy when it comes to forecasting, so perhaps some of our meteorologists should spend some time in school studying burrowing rodents. Just a thought...

Anyway, tonight we will embrace this obscure holiday even further with a tradition of watching a movie with Madison: "Jack Frost." It's a Bass and Rankin animated movie, much like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," only this one stars a groundhog named Pardon-Me-Pete, who tells the story of Jack Frost. Madison enjoys these little stop-motion movies, just like I did when I was her age.

Afterwards, and when Madison is in bed, Mommy and Daddy will watch the movie "Groundhog Day" once more. It's become an annual tradition for us: we really like that movie. It's one of Daddy's favorites. In fact, this morning we had the soundtrack playing for fun at about breakfast time.

Perhaps next year on February 2, we'll go visit General Beau, the South's leading weather forecaster. Or maybe we'll travel farther: Mommy and Daddy have always wanted to go to Punxsatawney, Pennsylvania! Or perhaps we'll just stay burrowed in our house like a groundhog, just waiting for spring. No matter what we'll do, it'll be fun because we make it so.

Happy Groundhog Day!

On February 2, a certain groundhog in Pennsylvania will emerge from his winter burrow. Legend says an early spring is on its way if he doesn't see his shadow, but it's six more weeks of winter if he does. Whatever Punxsutawney Phil predicts, your kids will surely dig this adorable Groundhog Cupcake.

Ingredients
  • Baked cupcake
  • Almond Joy candy
  • White frosting
  • White jelly beans
  • Black decorators' gel
  • Watermelon slice candy
  • Brown M&M's Minis
  • Chocolate cookie
Instructions
  1. Remove a piece of cake the width of an Almond Joy candy from the center of a baked cupcake. Set the candy upright in the hole, then spread a layer of white frosting on the cupcake.

  2. For the groundhog's eyes, trim the ends from a white jelly bean, stick them in place with frosting, then dot them with black decorators' gel. Add a tiny triangle cut from a watermelon slice candy for a nose, brown M&M's Minis for ears and cheeks, and a tiny rectangular piece of white jelly bean for teeth. Sprinkle chocolate cookie crumbs around the partially emerged groundhog, and he's ready to greet his fans.
