Mommy has the fall decor out, despite the fact that it's still pretty warm outside, and it is technically still summer. Fall starts later on this week officially, but here we are halfway through September and we're ready to get this party started. It might be the apple trip that makes it official, or perhaps it is the first taste of something with pumpkin spice. We talked about how we have the three breakfast food groups in the house now: Count Chocula, Booberry, and Frankenberry. But this just seals the deal: Mommy puts out these pumpkins that Ye-Ye created, along with a new scarecrow that Madison picked out from the store the other day. Also in place are the mums that Mommy found - she planted those today in the front, complimenting the other fall decor, along with the new garden flag as well. It all looks rather nice. She's working on the interior now as well - we're ready for fall!
It was somewhat of an ordinary day, although Madison got a rare 'B' on a test this morning. It was a two-part test, and she got a 97 on the first part, with an 82 on the other part. It averages out to an 89.5, which rounded off is an A, so it works out. Plus she has a lot of other A's in that class, so her honor roll status isn't really in too much danger. She's doing well is the point, although we're having to keep a closer look than usual, because to quote Madison herself, "It can all be a bit overwhelming." We're trying not to stand over her shoulder with demands, but rather help her along with assignments and studying when she needs it. It's a balance, and so far it's working out. At least I hope we're not being too annoying!
We watched a few episodes of Star Wars Rebels tonight, including one of Daddy's favorites, "The Honorable Ones," which is the beginning of a unique turn for the character Agent Kallus. Anyway, we're still in the Star Wars mode here. When asked what she wants to watch, the answer is usually "Star Wars Rebels." Apparently we're going through all four seasons for real.
We read a bit tonight from the Marvel comics, tonight's issue being one of Daddy's favorites, X-Men Unlimited #1. It features Storm, Cyclops and Professor Xavier in Antarctica, and is the first of the "Unlimited" series that ran back then. We're visiting with the Acolytes next time, which are comics I honestly don't remember that much. It's like reading some for the first time, it's been so long. All of these have been placed in plastic tubs downstairs, just waiting for the time I could read them with Madison, and she loves to sit on the couch and read with me.
We read some more tonight - we're at the beginning of "The Penultimate Peril," which of course means "The Next-To-Last Peril" for the Baudelaire children. Only two books left, after all this time. We keep plowing forward, chapter after chapter. Daddy has a few late nights coming up, so we might have to put a pause on that, but we're finishing this series soon enough. I'd say somewhere in October for sure.
Speaking of October, things are coming along on that Haunted Mansion game - the mansion itself is done, and in what little spare time I have, I'm working on the graveyard next. That should be done hopefully before October, so Madison will be excited to play that board game. Okay, I will be too. And so will Mommy. It looks like fun. When Daddy was young, we had a Haunted Mansion board game, and it was the official one with gears, a wall of the mansion, and all sorts of 3D moving parts. I imagine that's pretty pricy to find again, but this one I'm building now should be a nice offering instead. The only real cost is the amount of time spent making it, but that's the great thing about these long-term projects: the end result, and the knowledge and pride in the time spent building it.
Tonight we said our prayers and read from our devotional again. And it was an early night for all of us - we have this week, and then next week Madison actually has off from school, which means we get to sleep in! That's another thing to look forward to!
