Madison's interim report card came home today and the news was good, although not surprising, because we check into her grades online all the time. She has all A's so far, and that's amazing. We're proud of her, because she works hard to get the grades she does, really putting forth an effort. That was the case with the solar system project she carried in to school today. It appeared to be something completely awesome, and we were guides through it all, but Madison painted every bit of it (except maybe a few continents on the planet Earth), and drew out the orbits too. Mommy helped with the glue gun, and Madison even made the labels after a little help from Daddy. We got to school a little early this morning, just so she wouldn't have to work her way through any crowds while trying to carry a solar system. Fortunately, that plan worked - although there were a few other cars arriving at the same time, each emerging from their vehicles carrying a solar system. The entire sixth grade arrived today, many of them carrying solar systems to their rooms - later this afternoon, Daddy saw a painted blue styrofoam ball rolling in the parking lot. I could only suspect that some poor student was lamenting the loss of the planet Neptune. Madison's project remained intact though, and we were glad of that. The glue held, that mysterious substance that holds the universe together. It was hot glue though, not gluons or anything related to chromodynamics. The sun keeps all the planets in place, and oh yes, the big yellow one is the sun!
After school today, we had tacos for dinner. Because it is Tuesday, and that's what happens on Tuesday. Somewhere late in Madison's life, she'll still be eating tacos on Tuesday, because that's a completely natural thing to do. I mean, why would you not eat tacos on Tuesday? That's the sort of thing an uncultured Philistine would do. I suspect that this is how most of those extra laws the Pharisees tacked on were added: we've always had tacos on Tuesday, and therefore that's the way it must be from now on. In fact, anyone who doesn't have tacos on Tuesday should be stoned or something. So mote it be!
The new feature to tonight's taco was this salsa that was extraordinarily hot. It was not a liquid sort of salsa, but in fact a collection of chopped vegetables like tomatoes, onions and peppers. The peppers were actually jalapeƱo peppers, unbeknownst to any of us, and as a result, we had these amazingly spicy tacos that were somewhat uncomfortable to eat! We only had one taco each, Madison and Daddy, and both of us promptly agreed that there is such a thing as too hot. This was a remarkable moment for Madison, who actually thrives off of hot and spicy foods. Just this past Sunday at the rodeo, she was enjoying the spicy buffalo chicken that was served there. We had a back-up plan for salsa, which is always a highly recommended strategy if you have salsa lovers in your house. The uber spicy salsa was a mistake item, a mislabeled container that wasn't supposed to be as hot as it was, so it wasn't like we intentionally set out to buy it. But the point is this: there is a line, a threshold of spiciness that Madison has discovered. It's a place where things are too hot, and therefore no longer fun to eat. I will have to admit that her level of tolerance is much higher than mine is at present, and this does not deter her from wanting "spicy stuff." The latest trend is that she has an incredible appetite for all things spicy, and the accompanying drinks that will have to come with the spicy stuff in order to calm the fires within her mouth down. I do not know where this sudden desire for spicy food comes from - and it's ironic that she doesn't like the Asian spices as much as the Mexican dishes, or the buffalo sauces. Which is something I am suddenly pondering: why are they called buffalo sauces, when buffaloes aren't exactly spicy? Perhaps it has to do with the location of Buffalo, New York.
I digress. Today we were at martial arts again, and Madison is learning a double kick, which is basically one of those kicks that most Hollywood actors perform with the help of stunt wires. She's got both feet in the air at the same time, kicking out at something in front of her. And tonight... that was Daddy. At least it was when we got home to the practice studio. Or, at least the kitchen.
We watched a few episodes of "Rebels" tonight, and read from "The Grim Grotto," aye. We prayed and were thankful for another great day today, the first school day of September. There are only fourteen school days in September, because of an upcoming vacation period. That will be nice, won't it? But time is going by quickly, as it usually tends to do. Decades gliding by like Indians, time is cheap. We'll be grateful for all days, even busy days like this. Those vacation days will be something to look forward to though, as Mommy has been doing a bit of research about various possible destinations and festivals. It's a great time of year, and it's just getting started!
