We surprised Madison with a trip to the movies this afternoon, or evening really. It was after speech therapy, which went well, by the way. Madison needs to work on words that end in 'er' and other words that rhyme with 'fire' or 'tire.' This is her homework for the next few weeks, one of the few areas we really have to focus on.
She had no idea this movie came out this weekend, and we didn't realize it until we were passing by a movie theater marque earlier today. So we checked out a time, and dropped by for a fun surprise for Madison. We saw "Minions" tonight, which Madison really liked a lot. If those little yellow guys are in the movie, you can do no wrong really. Even if the story isn't as strong, the minions keep the kids laughing all the way through. But it does bring up an interesting trend in movies, now that we've seen "The Penguins" as well. The characters (Penguins and Minions) are similar in that both are really the funniest thing about their franchises. Similarly, so was Mater from "Cars." Yet when their sequels make these amusing sidekicks the feature attraction, it just doesn't work as well. Now I didn't mind Mater being the main star of "Cars 2" so much, but many others did. So for their sake, we'll call it "The Mater Effect." You can see it in action somewhat with "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," where Captain Jack Sparrow suddenly is thrust 'all by his onesy' into the part of 'main character.' Based on what we're seeing with the evidence of this in play, you can see how a movie about Scrat from "Ice Age" would not work. Yes, he's the best thing in the movies. No, he can't carry it on his own. We sort of felt that way about the Penguins, and today about the Minions.
Regardless of our petty opinions, when all is said and done, Madison loved it. She had a great surprise at the theater, and was happy to see the Minions once more. And yes there is something after the credits, something madly chaotic as you would expect.
Her day was somewhat madly chaotic as well! She was at art camp this morning, continuing work on her folk art. One project she was working on was what's called a 'god's eye.' We have a few of these that Mommy made when she was at school in her younger years (only a few years ago!), and we put them on our Christmas tree each year. Now we'll have one to add to the collection.
Meanwhile, Mommy and Daddy were at Cracker Barrel, and a few other places as well. We were selling off some older clothing of Madison's, donating books to the library, visiting the bank, and there was a trip to Goodwill in there too. Yep, Daddy found a few more old records. This time, Daddy found another gem, a Carman record, "The Champion." It's in perfect condition! I remember listening to that quite a few times in the 80's!
After the movie tonight, it was a late night to bed. We still read from "Princess Labelmaker," in fact getting close to finishing it. We're at the point in the story where the principal is revealed not to be such a villainous character after all: it goes higher than that. All the way to the top of our government. Oh yes, this book, and the Jabba one are a stinging indictment of our current school policies, all done with satire and Star Wars references. That said, we're enjoying the books thus far (outside of that one chapter Daddy had to edit somewhat as he was reading it).
So it was a full day. Tomorrow will be even more though. We have a new series to do, and there's a lot to do with it, from videos to skits to stage work to display case to booklets to handouts to costumes to props to ... well, you get the idea...
G'night!
