Sack Race

This morning Madison found Jingle Bell in a sack race, and it looks like he's about to win!  The weather is getting decidedly cooler outside, more like winter, and the gloom has set in to the point where we all stayed indoors most of the day.

In honor of yesterday's visit with the Festival of the Nativity, we brought out Madison's Fisher Price Nativity Set, a three-box empire that she had spread out all beneath the other Christmas tree.  She spent much of the day playing with these figures, adding adventures for Mary and Joseph that probably aren't in the Bible.

Soon, Daddy was off to work, with videos and preparations set for tomorrow - but he did come home later on.  We were off for a fine evening seeing "The Nutcracker!"

We had tickets tonight to the Gainesville School of Ballet's "Nutcracker" performance.  It was at Pearce Auditorium, where we just saw "Alice in Wonderland" two months ago.  How time flies.  Anyway, we had front row seats again, right there at the front of the balcony.  Stand up too quickly and you'll get vertigo.  Madison was perfectly still for the production, watching everything very carefully, enjoying the performances.

"The Waltz of the Flowers" was fantastic, and energetic.  It was highly enjoyable.  Of note was the injury earlier in the day - the Sugar Plum Fairy (or something like that) had sprained her ankle, possibly due to a wet surface on the floor.  By remarkable coincidence, the girl who played that part last year was up and visiting this weekend.  She was coming to the show tonight, and in an amazing twist, she was here and able to fill in for that role.  She had one hour's rehearsal (compared with the weeks of rehearsal time the others had), and just so happened to have her costuming there.  Anyway, she did a fantastic job filling in - you would have never known there was a last minute replacement.

We really enjoyed this version.  It was different from the others in some ways, but that didn't mean we won't be seeing it again.  In fact, perhaps some day we'll see Madison in the production herself.  For now, she's content to be watching it from the audience.  She was watching nearly the entire thing, although towards the end she was getting a little sleepy.

Afterwards, we made our traditional drive down Green Street, which is getting more and more decorated for a big Christmas celebration tomorrow.  Some of the houses kept their stately decor, a more traditional look which suits us just fine.  Others seemed to go a little crazy about their decorations, hanging things from trees high above, and filling the yard with stand-up figures that light up.

We got home late, and were ready for bed immediately.  Daddy's been keeping the Christmas movie devotional idea going though - here's today's entry:

DECEMBER 7 - "The Santa Clause 2"

In "The Santa Clause 2," there is quite a bit of adventure! It all starts with a Council Meeting of Legendary Figures. There, in a year-end gathering, we see such fantastic legendary figures as Santa, the Easter Bunny, Cupid, Father Time and even the Tooth Fairy.

It's the Tooth Fairy that starts out the meeting. He wants to change his name to something a bit more masculine. Over time, he's suggested names like "Tooth Man," "Tooth Guy," "Tooth," "Captain Floss," "Plaque Man," and "Roy." Santa even threw out a possible new name for his friend: "The Molinator." Too bad the rest of the Council wants to just keep calling him the Tooth Fairy.

Santa should know all about names: over time, he has gone by the name of St. Nicholas, Kris Kringle, Santa Claus, Scott Calvin, Father Christmas, Sinterklaas, Pere Noel, Babbo Natale, and even Pelznickel!

You see, a name says a lot. What you call someone is important. This is why God goes by so many names in the Bible. Throughout scriptures, He is called Alpha, Omega, Ancient of Days, Creator, Comforter, Dayspring, High Priest, Great Shepherd, Judge, King of kings and much more.

Why does He have so many names? The reason is we have so many needs! Yet for every type of need we have, He has an answer. If we need to learn, He is our Teacher. When we are weak, He is the Strong Tower. When we are without hope, He is our Savior. When we are sick, He is our Physician. He is everything to us, whatever we need and whenever we need it!

This Christmas, no matter where you are, call upon His name: the Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.
