Our government has been shut down. People are being driven from their homes and businesses because they are on government land or at least along roads on government property. Veterans are blocked from visiting memorials, and it's frankly pretty ugly. In fact, we haven't seen it this ugly since... last October.
In the spirit of our government's recent shutdown, Madison's body decided to follow suit: she has strep throat. Yep, this means we stop all taxpayer-funded activities such as school tomorrow, and probably piano practice as well. We'll miss out on the Book Fair tomorrow, but we may see that later on in the week. No promises currently, as we're taking everything with a wait-and-see attitude.
How is this for timing? We had a scheduled doctor's appointment this afternoon at 4:00 pm. Madison came home at 3:00 pm, sick. She couldn't describe her illness beyond a headache, but when Mommy took her temperature, it was at 103 or 104. We gave her some medication to help with the fever, and soon we were off to the doctor's for a check-up and a consultation. We had her tested with a throat culture, and sure enough, it was strep throat.
And so this explains much of the day. We stopped on the way home to get some medication and milk, and of course at this point Madison was happy as can be. Medicine works precisely as it says on the package, and exactly how long it says it will. Sure enough, at 8:30 pm tonight, she was starting to get a high fever again. She's also been sleepy - really sleepy. We had plugged in a movie tonight, but both Daddy and Madison were falling asleep very early into it. Might have to redo that one!
One bright spot is the day is the acquisition of three cereals that we get each year: Count Chocula, Booberry, and Frankenberry.
This last one is fun this year for a few reasons. First of all, it tastes delicious and changes the flavor of your milk when you're done with it. Secondly, Madison is reading better and better each year, and has noticed that Frankenberry has the same last name as her cousin Hannah. And Aunt Shain too! This is one of those funny moments you don't really bother to argue with or explain. You just go, "Yes, you've got that right - they're probably related!"
We're sick in the house, but that doesn't mean we won't make it to the Book Fair sometime this week - and when we do, we'll pick up the other thing related to Frankenberry. It's the next book in the "Fly Guy" series, called "Fly Guy and the Frankenfly."
This is a book that's getting a lot of buzz in the house. I mean, who wouldn't be excited about reanimating the dead tissue of a house fly? Am I right? If you know the series, you know it will be the perfect book for someone Madison's age - although probably more for a boy than a girl. That won't stop her from being interested in some of the boy stuff too. She'll still be wanting to get "Pinkalicious" as well, but she's pretty balanced with her interests.
So now for the tie-in with the beginning of the blog: a dead government. We've been shutdown with plenty of disturbing stories to get every citizen all riled up. Perhaps it is time to reanimate this dead government? Or, perhaps that's been the problem all along. Perhaps it was brought back from the dead once too many times, and now keeps rising up and stomping around like the monster that it has become. All the Frankenstein stories may be scary, but at least they're fiction.
